oOple forum member NISMO has an excellent Tamiya Avante re-release build thread and comparison to the original 1988 version of Tamiyas 'competition' race buggy.

I think the TRF502X will have a very tough time beating the Avante :p

What I'd be interested in to see is whether the Avante 2011's revisions and the modern production technniques, developments and 'upgrades' make it perform better than the original car - that it will be more reliable than the original will be no surprise if you compare them now, with the aging plastics of the original it should no match for the 2011 in terms of durability.
