Hello,

I'm looking at buying a good starter buggy to learn racing. Nothing too lame that I'll want to change soon, yet nothing too obscure that the parts and upgrades are hard to get.

So...Team Associated RC10 B4.1 £209 or Thunder Tiger Pheonix XB £175

As Thunder Tiger took over and own Team Associated in 2005 I read somewhere that the Phoenix is basically an older version of the RC10, with some newer bits on.

Here's a criptic posting I found on an American forum...

"Associated T3=TTR Phoenix st
Associated B4=TTRPhoenix bx
Associated tc3=TTR Sparrowhawk vx
Associated GT=TTR Phoenix GT
Associated TC3 chassis used on the new TTR sparrowhawk XB 4WD buggy and XXB brushless 4wd Buggy

parts will interchange."

So just how similar is the Phoenix with the current B4.1? Are the suspension arms and shock towers and other commonly broken parts the same?

Can I upgrade the Phoenix with B4.1 parts?

Any thoughts on comparing these two buggies?

Take the plunge and spend a little more on the B4.1 in the first place!

It's as good a starter car as it is a full race spec car. It almost doesn't need any upgrades even to get it setup the same as the ones you'd see regularly running around the top finals at the nationals...but there are some things that help that you won't be able to resist if you stick with it and get the bug :D

Parts availability are second to none, and most people have run them at one time or another so setup advice is plentiful trackside as well.

The Phoenix looks very similar to the B3 buggy but I don't think it is exactly the same. The Sparrowhawk car is not the same as a TC3 either.

At that price, there is no sense in buying the Thunder Tiger if you plan to race. The B4 is a much better car with wider parts support.

Even if the Phoenix does have interchangeable parts with a B3, the B3 is effectively a completely different car to the B4 anyway so there is no upgrade path to follow.

B4.1 all the time. Plenty of spares at each race meeting too!.

You'll be amazed how quick it is.

The TT Phoenix is the B3 with metric fittings.

The TT Phoenix is the B3 with metric fittings.

Yep, it is.

And yes, I have tried B3 parts on a phoenix and they are the same.

If you want one it's better to pick up a used B3 factory team, most likely cheaper and has titanium turnbuckles, proper shocks, ball bearings.. Last one I picked up on Ebay was $60.
The B3 is still my weapon of choice in 2WD mod, it's a bit harder to drive than a B4 but it's still fast. B3's also never break front arms because the front bulkhead is so flexible.

Just get the B4.1..

Better car, better spares supply, better support and will actually be worth something when you come to sell it :)
