Hi all
my first post on here so maybe you guys can help me out where other's others dare to enter!
I have three astute, the last is one to use!
and i want to fit a fast motor in it and have a team vortex 13.5 gagging to jump inside!
so here's the problem the ball diff gearbox, I have heard many a coment from going on different sites it won't handle it, that may be in its present form but I'm sure something can be done or changed to get it to work!
and I don't just want to opt out and get the super astute gearbox either!
Here's what it looks like inside!
the coments I'm getting is it will just melt!
Thanks in advance
si

A 13.5 BL motor is not particulaly hot... we run them in our touring cars as a stock class (27turn equivilent) although with the rise of timing advance timing/turbo speedos we are now somewhat faster than we achieved with the stock brushed motor, but I would have thought your Astute would be fine...

Brushless motors do generate more torque than the equivilent brushed motor, but guys used to run some hot motors in their Astute's back in the day without issue... my only concern is that you might be dissapointed with the speed from a 13.5

The Astute gearbox isn't that bad, especially with a pretty mild brushless system. They got the bad reputation due to Tamiya sticking it in the King Cab stadium truck and expecting it to handle race motors with the monster size tyres.

Biggest problem with it is when people don't maintain them as you have to dismantle the diff and add shims to adjust it, you can't just tighten up a screw in the outdrive when it starts slipping. They also weren't often built with proper silicone diff grease, all contributing to excess wear, then they aren't reshimmed to adjust them to take up the play.

Build it properly, adjusting the shims so it doesn't slip, and it should be reliable.

as said by terrysc build and shim it properly and it should be fine. not quite the same i know but i do know of someone who ran an 11 double in an astute without drama, so if built correctly it should take something like a 10.5. has your astute got a slipper, they are the key to avoiding destruction really,

Interesting thread. I'm also restoring an old 58080. He's completely standard. Just ordered new body, wings, cowl, tires, decals,...

Let me know which modifications are possible with parts from now? I mean not old and rare parts... Maybe mix up with dt-02 chassis?
