I'm after some advice for upgrading my electrics on my car. Having not been racing for years I bought a TT-01 chassis ( basic I know ) but I wanted to make sure I still could drive. Its hopped up with most alloy upgrade parts etc, but I'm still running it with my old Tekin 411G and Reedy Sonic S motor. It rapid, but I fear due to the age of the gear I'm guessing it'll fail some time soon.
What is a good speedo / motor combo ? bearing in mind that I'm planning to upgrade to a B44 or road going equivalent in the new year.
I noticed a trend for brushless, but is this really for topend competion purposes only ?

if you stump up for brushless now you have no maintanece and can concentrate on your driving

It mailnly depends on what budget your looking at, speedo wise for 40 quid the Novak XRS is one of the best I have used (and still use in 4cell!)
can handle down to 15 turns so a 19T checkpoint money motor would be my next investment!
Have you changed the TT01 shocks to the trf version (the trfs are the best in the buisness)
For a lot more money 90/110 the VFS and GTX are really good speedos too, If it was me I would get the new TA05 MSX kit abd build up from there
You do get hooked on this and will be amazed how much you spend, Its best getting decent equipment now that lasts!!!;)

cheers for the advice. I have upgraded the shocks to the height adjustable, oil filled tamiya ones. I can see the limitations of the TT-01 chassis, but equally its not obvious what the next upgrade kit would be. I've seen the TA05, but also quite keen on the AE TC4.
As for electrics, I would rather spend more to get something that won't need upgrading at a later date, so I'll look into it.
I find it quite frustrating having no local shop to ask these sort of questions too, so apologies for the simplicity of what I'm asking !

Hi Martin,
We (The Raceplace.co.uk) are doing the all new Tekin R1 Pro Brushless System. This is at a special price for anyone who pre orders, we will be placing the order tomorrow. If you look further down this thread you will see a tab labelled Tekin?.
These are the first sensorless speed controls to be open to the market.
Our team driver Kevin Lee has been running these for the last two weeks and is very happy with performance and results.
If you would like to know more then contact me and i can give you full details.

Ask away mate only trying to save you money and stop you from making the same mistakes as me!!!
Dont get a TC4, the wishbones are very very weak and break if you look at them, best buy is a HPI pro 4 second hand from ebay, its full carbon and the drive train is much better, plus cyclone bits fit it too!;):D
(I have still got my TC4 and about ten wishbones just in case!!)

I've looked at the ta05 kit, but have taken a liking to the TRF416 chassis. Are the TRF series completely different to the ta05 cars or are they just an extreme modified version.?

They use some common parts (pulleys, outdrives), but the TRF series are completely different cars. In fact, the TRF's aren't really Tamiya's : they are designed and for 85% built by company called Techracing.

Ok thanks, sounds like the TRF kits are top quality cars, but at a cost. How competitive are the TA-05 chassis ? is it a noticable upgrade from a TT-01 with hop-ups.

The TA05 is a very good car indeed. Very good handling and an efficient drivetrain, plenty of tuning options.
I used to run a TA05R and it was excellent, very close indeed to the TRF cars, perhaps even a little better when the grip is low due to the chassis flex and more rearwards weight distribution.
