I am proper stuck.
I have a 3G that was on 3.1.2 that I unlocked myself and been using happily on a tesco sim card (having previously used on O2).
Whilst tipsy on friday I decided to finally accept ITunes offer to 'upgrade' software to 4.2.1 (latest one for 3G), which has screwed me right over.
I'ts now on 4.2.1 (8C148) and baseband 05.15.04 (which having read up since seems to be my problem), I've JB'd it and ultrasn0w'd it with no joy I get no service no matter what I do. The phone works perfectly on wifi as a touch but need it as a phone. I've even bought a O2 PAYG sim to try but this doesn't work either so it's defo the phone that's crocked.
Any advice very much appreciated!

Don't think there is a jailbreak for 4.2.1 yet! When you upgrade after a jb it locks the phone up. Apple have designed the updates to do this!
I think it will be a case of trawling Internet to find a new jb that can break the new software. Sorry to be the barer of bad news dan!

I can JB it for 4.2.1 (and run the new ultrasn0w) but it either way I can't get it to recognise a network, O2 or tesco.
Unfortuantly I can't restore back to old 3.1.2 (or at least I can't see how to do it), but from what I can find it's the updated baseband that's the issue
Interestingly I did read one thing that said that if the phone doesn't know your 'my number' in the settings it won't work. Mine is 'unknown' but it won't let me edit it, which is annoying.

I managed to downgrade my iPod touch 3rd gen by downloading the software from this (http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/) website.
Then when you connect the phone to the computer, open iTunes, hold shift and click on restore, then find the software. I had to edit a iTunes file slightly to allow it to do this however, like in the 1st step of this (http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/downgrade-iphone-3g-3gs-from-ios-4-to-3-1-2/) website.
Once I'd restored it I jailbroke it with Limerain, as I went back to 4.1.
I don't know whether this will solve your problem though.

Dan, are you saying it doesn't work when you've tried to jailbreak 4.2.1 or it doesn't work since you upgraded to the non jailbroken version of the software?
If it's the former, you probably have to download a patch from cydia which restores the carrier settings
Dan,
I was in the Three shop a few months ago and the guy who works there was telling me about his mate who'd done a similar thing, so he took the phone to Apple and said he'd bought the phone off eBay, but when it arrived it was jailbroken etc and they have some sort of policy that they'll fix / replace it because it's not your fault.
That might be complete tosh (it is the Three man after all) but it may be an option if all else fails?

Thanks for the various help including PM’s off people. I got it sorted in the end but had to change the baseband which was nerve wracking as if it had gone wrong chances were it was FUBAR. Ended up on 4.2.1, JB and unlocked so it works on my tesco sim. Basically I’ve got where I wanted to be but after about 10 hours of messing about with it

Thats what you used to have to do with the first jailbreaks of the iphone. No doubt a better version will be released soon
