im looking to buy a brushless motor and speedo for my b44. i want something around a 5.5 whats the best make to go for and wheres the cheapest place then to get that from?? i have been on rcboyz.com and its half the price from over here but how much is shipping and insuarance costs like?
That argument again, import from States or Asia, lower costs, chance of being charged duty+ by customs and is the guarantee valid, worth a search on here looking for importing items or something, remember this site is supported by some shop advertising.

I'd always buy anything that may go wrong and need returning from the UK. In fact always from the same shop ... DC Racing. in fact I have NEVER bought so much as a screw from abroad in 20 years of racing! Think of how much money, time and effort it will cost you if your Asian' sourced brushless system doesn't work and needs to be returned!!!!!!! With the amount of brushless systems that are still being returned under gaurantee it is a huge gamble ..... similar to doing your own brain surgery!!!
The other argument is the long term future of the sport with all this buying abroad ... sooner rather than later the UK shops will be driven down due to lack of sales and then where will you get that part on a saturday to race on sunday? Who will run the clubs (most clubs have a shop connection)? Who will organise the big meetings (most big meetings have some form of support from the importers)? which equals ..... where will you race?????
Ordering from Asia is one thing .... won't be so nice when you have to fly to Asia to race now though will it!!!!
Please, please, please support the UK trade ...... remember it's not their fault this is one of the most expensive countries to live in .... they don't make the taxes!!!!!

While I quite agree that it makes sense to support your local model shop in a modern shopping environment can you honestly say that you _always_ buy locally and not on line? Or always shop at smaller stores, like local grocers, butchers, chemists etc than rather than big stores like Tescos, Morrisons, Asds etc?
I personally cannot justify UK prices on some items. An excellent example is plastic parts for Associated cars, even once you factor postage and import duty (which I will quite happily pay every time) you are still getting up to 75% discount!!
I'll admit electronics have a bigger risk, if they are faulty you either end up having to return to the shop in the foreign country or the manufacturer, but for me thats no different from here, I'll order on line and if its faulty it will get sent back.
I have had to return bits to other countries, my Spektrum system was faulty and I returned it directly to Horizon USA (£4 to ship it back), they repaired it FOC as it was less than a year old and returned it to me at their cost; took less than two weeks and has worked fine since. When I bought the system I checked how much I was saving (about £80 on UK prices at the time) and was quite happy to accept that it might cost me a bit more in the long run.
With shops like RC Boyz or Losi Parts House I have had superb service, in the unlikely event anything is wrong with the order they do everything they can to sort it. When shopping now unless I need a part for the next day I'd consider shops in the USA just as much as the UK, but like everything I'd research it; exchange rates, stock and prices all fluctuate both here and abroad.
Having said all that I bought my Hot Bodies D4 in the UK as it was the cheapest place to get it, and _all_ the D4 spares I have bought have been from UK shops, again because its the cheapest.
UK model shops have their hands tied by the distributors, who no doubt suffer at the hands of, amongst others, HM Revenue and Customs. I know of a few model shops that have closed because they don't have enough business to keep afloat, but at the same time none of them blamed the customers; they accepted, like all other shops (not just model shops), that the marketplace is changing and if you cannot keep up you must adapt or get out.
So I guess I'm saying shop smart, don't assume that importing is the cheapest, factor in the 17.5% VAT and 0-4% duty costs (over your £18 allowance) and £8 RM handling or £13.50 Parcel force charges (if your parcel is charged) and see how much you save. If its still a significant amount then yes, it's probably a good deal. see: http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/channelsPortalWebApp.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=pageTravel_ShowContent&propertyType=document&resetCT=true&id=HMCE_CL_001454
If you do order from another country make sure its at least a credit card or better yet, PayPal and that they are a registered seller with PayPal. Most online sellers will take PayPal and don't charge extra, as it costs them about the same as a credit card in the long run anyway. What ever you do - No wire transfers!!!
For the record I have a LRP Sphere competition and a Novak GTB and I prefer the LRP, both came from the states and I have had no problem with either, yet.
As for shipping costs, it will vary based on weight, but I normally go for the cheaper USPS services, international first-class air mail (about a 2-week delivery), up to 4lb parcels, take a look at http://ircalc.usps.gov/default.aspx?Mode=Intl_Single&CID=10150 for some ideas of costs.

Just remember if you send a grey import LRP/Nosram speedo/motor back and they check the serial no, and find not to be UK/Europe market they will charge a massive handling fee and poss not repair.
Also UK Muchmore products have there serial nos recorded is case of theft or fault and they also will charge loads for repairing grey imports.
i agree with AE parts prices are silly Losi there dosent seem to be such a massive difference.
