View Full Version : How do i stop tail happy under acceleration

Right guys im running my cougar sv and i really think
its great for riding the bumps and jumping,
But i seem to get the back end kick out alot
under acceleration from the corner.

The grip into and mid corner is great but under acceleration
out of corners it kicks right out.

How do i stop this? do i get a new rear brace of 4degrees
or stand the shocks up on the tower maybe.

Can never remember if its standing shocks up helps or laying them down on exit traction.

Any helps much appreciated.

Or maybe try the longer chassis would this help?
Im running on astro using staggers on front and yellow spikes on rear

I'd give Tom Cockerill's setup a go that he used at Stotfold or RHR. It's in the setup section on here and on www.racing-cars.com (http://www.racing-cars.com)
Seemed to sort out the majority of issues I was having with rear end grip.

Probably first off, try backing your slipper off a little see if this helps.

Have already for it set fairly loose, well it doesnt lift the front wheels anyway.
I just dont like to doo too much adjusting of the slipper as i dont want to burn it out

I usually set mine so that I can just about move it when holding the rear wheels.
It would have to be stupidly loose to burn it out.

What oils and springs are you running?

Perhaps try spacers under the rear block?

This will be less anti-squat, so it will squat more, hence more weight transfer to the rear. Increased traction on power?

4 degree block might help too? Not sure.

The cougar was designed for astro turf tracks that have alot of traction, so its been optimized for that type of track.

I looked at your track, its half dirt half natural grass if I'm not mistaken. Saddle pack setup is a must in the dirt and if you can the +8mm chassis is a big improvement also. Put some weight under the motor pinion and behind the saddle packs, 14 grams lead if you can. 32.5 oil in the back 2.0 springs 5 hole piston. 35 oil in the front 3.5 spring 4 hole piston.

Check the diff, i have had to rebuild mine twice now when i started to loose the rear end in corners. Car goes from perfect to spinning out in the middle of a run, so i have started a more regular maint schedule on the diff

Thanks for the advice guys.
Im going to try softer rear springs and get hold of some
different size roll center plates for the rear.

I realise im already running 4degress toe so will try anti squat etc next.

i take it you meant yellow mini-spike on the rear? not full spike?

Hey Folks does anyone know what the anti squat is as standard on the cougar?

I have removed the shims from under the rear but unsure what the antisquat is at this position?

Depends on which lower gearboxes you have. 3 or 4.5 degrees.

With no shims you have full antisquat, with 2.5mm shims you'll have no antisquat thats with 3 degrees. with 4.5 degrees you will need 3.25mm. hope this helps.

Equal Washers = 0o Toe-in
0.50 Difference = 0.65o Toe-in
1.00 Difference = 1.30o Toe-in
1.50 Difference = 1.95o Toe-in
2.00 Difference = 2.60o Toe-in
2.50 Difference = 3.25o Toe-in
3.00 Difference = 3.90o Toe-in

Big + 1 on the diff. Tighten it a bit more. Mine was doing this even on carpet. Turns out diff got really loose.

Also I as the other dude said add some weight if you have not already
