upgraded mad rat shocks

are there any decent shocks for the mad rat that aren't around 50 quid each set (front and rear) as i need them to be strong enough

sorry from a b4 mate but saying that same ones are used on a b44 version 1
there is a version2 out, but cost more as there new but i dont think theres nothing wrong with version 1 just my opinion
but make sure you get ae b4 ones not replacement b4 ones if that makes sense

Or losi xxx buggy shocks, pick them up off ebay for around £30-£40 for a set..

But ae ones arent as good, unless you get the V2, but thats another arguement...

I personally run the ansmann big bores on my X2C and they're brilliant, im getting a second car at some point which will have the "standard" bore shocks on so i can compare them then... Ive heard good things about them though :)

Cheapest way to upgrade the shocks on a mad rat is just buy the alloy bodies which comes with tops threaded collar and bottoms and buy the plastic shock tops . Then just take the rest of the stuff you need out of the original ones.

So four alloy shocks for less than the price of two big bores.

Big bores are awesome though if you can afford them :drool:

i prefer ae one as i could never get losi ones to work for me but MOST could must be something im doing wrong

i used 35 front and 30 front but every one has a opinion but thats what suited me

As mentioned, varies between shocks and driving style... I personally ran losi shocks as follows...

Front - 32.5 wt losi oil, red pistons black springs

Rear - 27.5 wt losi oil, red pistons, pink springs

Can someone tell me one thing, some shocks are 55mm, 65mm, 75mm etc what's that all about and which is the right one for the rat ??

as i posted yesterday (can't be bothered to retype, so i'll copy/paste)....

I've just upgraded mine, i was sick of the tops popping off the kit shocks on landings & in general use.. after 4 runs (1 practice, 3 heats at a club meeting) the other week, 3 of them ended with shock problems & i decided that was enough & something had to be done.

I have read all the blurb on people saying "get the losi shocks" but at those prices i can wait, so as i tried the upgrade on an Ansmannn touring car i had changing from kit shocks to upgraded alloy ones from the Ansmann range, i decided to take the plunge on a gamble.

I've bought the Ansmann aluminium shocks 95mm for the rear (part number 201000039) for the rear & the 85mm shocks (part number 201000038) for the front & each retail for less than a tenner a pair so cheap enough not to break the bank but cheap enough to fiddle around with. I've stripped the entire rat kit shocks down & also the alloy shocks & transferred the internals (shaft, piston, red bladder, bottom eyelets) from the kit shocks & transferred them into the alloy ones & they are now like silk with 3 hole pistons & 30wt oil. i've kept the top alloy eyelets & shock body (as they were the root of the problem in the 1st place on the plastic shocks) but simply had to put a 2mm alloy spacer & a small washer to act as a stand-off on the shock tower as the eyelets on the alloy shocks have a metal collar fitted which seems more substantial than the plastic kit one & the shocks seem more articulated on the metal collars so tend to move freely even with the top bolts nipped right up.

I've also had to add about 4mm of rubber pipe to the inside of the shock shaft to limit the drop of the front arms (with the kit shafts fitted). I've also got the 75mm shocks on order which i'm going to test on the fronts or swap to if i need to. although i've not track tested them fully in all conditions apart from a bit of track time indoors when i 1st got the shocks, they seem better than the kit shocks, granted probably not the Losi quality but an improvement on the kit plastic rubbish even in a standard set-up with just the kit springs fitted as the springs that come on the alloy shocks are rock hard.

i got a set of b4 v2's with 35wt in the front and 30wt in the rear the only modification i made was to remove the ball joints on them to a more standard eyelet and i haven't run them yet but they already improve the looks and the suspension is much better

+1 for the Losi shocks, they are a few mm longer than the standard ones so give a bit more welcoming droop.

For those racing the Big Bore shocks are a must.
See them installed below. I have just used them for the first time on a hard packed bumpy surface ...............WOW

My set up was
Front - white piston with Losi 30 wt oil Soft spring
Rear - black piston with Losi 27.5 wt oil Soft Spring.
