View Full Version : Quick decision on brushless esc needed!

Ive got to order today as im on holiday as from tomorrow morning, coming back on Thursday next week and racing in the SHRCCC fastrax event. After buying a second hand esc off here which has been nothing short of £60 down the drain!!! Im forced to get a new one, but I have to order today to get it for next Thursday when I return.
Do I go for

I would go for the orca set up, or you could purchase the ORCA Q spark series with a BRCA approved motor for £132.99

4wd off road. Grasstrack. Im currently running a Losi Excellorin 6.5t motor. Looking at that orca combo above seems like a very good option. The problem i have is that the car wont run unless i give it a push then its off, soon as i stop i need to push it again. The esc i have is a Orion vortex, bought second hand. Its never completed a race yet. It overheats, so i stripped it down to find the thermal matting was covered in grit and was not making contact with the heat sink. I cleaned that all up and have put thermal grease on it and put it all back. Tried it for the first time last night where it was fine for 3 mins then game over. Still over heating and also this non running without a push fault. Dont 100% know if its the motor as well as the speed controller tbh.
I'm pretty much hooked on the hobbywing speedos at the moment.
Running them in both my and my son's touring cars (13.5T) at aldershot for the last 6 months or so and recently in my losi 22 with a 7.5T. None of them have ever missed a beat and these are only the £60 60amp ones. You'd probably want the 120amp one that you are lookinmg at with 4wd and a 6.5T.
If I was in the market for another speedo at the moment it would be a hobbywing.

HobbyWing XeRun 120A is the nuts for me. Hooked up to a 6.5T motor and with 'Dibbled' software it was flying at TORCH a couple of weekends ago with no heat issues at all. At the moment I wouldn't touch anything else... At the end of the day you're buying a Speed Passion for a fraction of the cost, Hobby Wing make the SP kit.
GiantCod have them (and the programing card) in stock.
If you decide to go the ORCA route have a word with Simon at RC Lazy, he'll get you sorted.

Yeah i meant the 120amp version my bad, about £60 pound from ebay. It's the same spec as the Speed Passion LPF. If you order it today it should be with you. Failing that I also recommend speaking to RC Lazy.

Ok, you got me on that one. Looks like both Racers in Exile and Giant Cod are both out of stock. :bored: Suppose you could give them a call and see when they are expecting any but I don't suppose you want to be risking being without a speedo if they do not turn up.
It's a shame you are running 4WD as Giant Cod have the 60amp versions in for less than £60 but you are going to be pushing it for 4wd/6.5T. Mine runs a treat with a 7.5T in 2WD on high grip astro - hardly gets warm.
If it was me in your position I think I'd probably go the easy route, spend an extra £40 and get one of the LRPs being advertised at the top of this page. At least you virtually guaranteed getting a speedo in time.
Shame though, because hobbywing makes most other speedos look over priced. Maybe that is linked in some way to the distribution/availability issue???

It's fine ... I have one in my car no problem at all!!!
In fact I prefer them as they have a higher power BEC so are perfect for power hungry modern servos with 4wd loads through them!
The only downside is that you can't use 3s but we can't do that for racing anyway.
I run mine with an Orion 5.5 and it barely gets warm!

Stuart @ Racers In Exile should have stocks back in any day now .... he has been caught out a little by the recent dramatic increase in demand. I know of a few guys moving from Tekin's to HobbyWing as it offers them the same features but is MUCH easier to adjust trackside without having to pop open the laptop.
