or their parents who can put me in touch with a car insurance company that hasn't had your eye's out to insure your road car
Son's 18 in August and we are looking insurance for him on a 1 litre town car, nothing flash.
Which insurance company have you chosen?
To be honest, your best bet is a price comparison site.
I can tell you that I am with Admiral and they were untouchable with my latest car which is a 1.6 turbo sporty little number and they were also untouchable when I had my 2.0 litre Renault Clio pocket rocket and also my 2.0 Honda Civic.
But in between I had a bog standard Vauxhall Astra hatchback and their prices were astronomical. It didnt make any sense.
So I would say, to use one of the main comparison websites and fill out all the details as accurately as you can.
Then pay close attention to what is included in each price returned as they vary from £0 voluntary excess to £400, and thats on top of the compulsory excess.
Then others will give free legal cover, breakdown, courtesy car, etc etc whilst others will charge extra for these 'perks'.
So the 'cheapest' isnt always the cheapest.
But if you fill it in properly and play close attention to the results before choosing then you shouldnt go far wrong.
Having said that, I was talking to a lad who had just passed his test and was driving a 1.2 engine car and the 'cheapest' he was able to get was in excess of £2,000 so you may want to be sitting down when you get the quote....
My cousin who is in his teens has just started driving and has cheaper insurance as he has a policy which has an 11pm curfew on it. The car is fitted with a tracking device and if he is out after 11 then he is hit with a fine. If he is home by 1 every night then there is no problem and his insurance is cheaper as a result. Personally, I would have hated this idea when I was that age, but the option is there.....
If he is home by 11 that should have said.

swift cover and or adrian flux
Thats ridiculous, but unfortunately I am not surprised....
10 years ago when I insured my first car I had to pay £1600 for the year and that was just a basic Citroen Saxo which was only £8,000 if brought brand new out of the showroom.
Since then, insurance prices have done nothing but increase. I have read a few articles about this and most companies are putting drivers prices up and up at each renewal, depsite them accumulating another years no claims so you would expect it to go down!?
Sadly, I dont know what the answer is but please let us know what you settle on as I am curious to know what price you do find....

I'm 17, and so far my cheapest quote is £3557.01 for a Fiesta , tried every car possible, and I have 1 years no claims from motorbike insurance.

Have you tried adding yourself to his policy, as a named driver on his car?
This brings the price down.

Few things to try mate.
1) Look at different cars (Fiesta is normally a good one) as FIAT are expensive to repair and are now stupidly tagged along side the ferrari badge
2) Try a 2nd policy for yourself as main driver and add son as a named driver
3) Look at any other courses like Pass Plus that will give him discount
4) Worst case, Buy a car that comes with 2 years free insurance.... this is aimed at new drivers. mebys a more expensive car but in total will be cheaper

He could try picking up an old mini. Get it old enough on classic insurance and a great car to learn to work on and still got loads of street cred. Sell it after one year and he,s sure to get his money back plus 1 years no cliams.

Classic cars are the way to go or possibly cars that aren't typically 1st cars like the focus saloon.

Some friends of our had the same crazy quote problems...
Their solution was for a grandparent to add their daughter as a named driver onto her policy. I think there were some other restrictions in there too, like the 11pm watershed.
Got her on the car for around £800 if I remember right.

Don't they clamp down on the old named driver thing now. Something like the main driver has to use the vehicle for a set percentage of the time. Worth checking first.
Yep, its called fronting and most insurance companies will not pay out if found that the named driver was the main driver.
And its also illegal as its classes as fraud.

Only trying to help !
I could find out the details, but my friends have sorted this properly and it's totally legit and above board. Daughter is not the main driver, only occasional and there are limits, I think there is a curfew or it might be a box in the car.
Main reason for doing it with granny was grannies car, my friends cars are a huge Audi estate and a brand new mini, so it was silly on those.
Dont worry im not having a go at you, Im a named driver on my wife policy and vice versa and some weeks i drive her car more than she does. Does this means im fronting as well?

Car insurance is an absolute joke imo,im 31 and im paying more now on a 1.8 escort than i did last year on my escort rs turbo, how do you work that out hey:confused:
i did see something funny on the news the other day about a lad that could not afford the quotes that he was getting on small cars like 106 etc so he brought a 1926 ford tractor and it costs him £56 a year fully comp to insure lol Some would say this aint very practical transport but if you tow a massive trailer you can take as many mates out with you as you can fit in it,sorted! just cant go very fast though lmao:thumbsup:

Well i passed my test last year at first attempt, ok but i am 33 and to insure a 1.4 2003 civic 3 door cost me....£2700
So i decided to get a quote for a civc type r 2009 plate which quoted £1300.
Mental frankly
Next i decided to see what would happen if i based myself from a differant address same cars price dropped to £700 for either car.
One tip that can reduce price is if the car is shared with an experianced driver BUT the novice driver is the main driver with mum or dad as a named driver. This is not fraud as it just means someone else in the family is also allowed to use the car and the new driver gets to start gaining no claims.

Fortunately I passed my test years ago when 2nd hand cars were cheap and i do not envy teens these days trying to get insurance. My 1st car cost me £100 and the insurance (3rd party fire and theft) was £303. So the insurance actually cost me 3x what the car cost. Ever since then my insurance has cost around 300-350 FComp whatever car I insure.
Back to the scam bit - We HAVE to have insurance, it's not like we can opt out. Insurance companys can basically charge what they like, if they all put up their premiums for everybody then we all have to pay more but a 18yr old paying £2000 p/annum a jump of 30% is huge + £600.
There is no simple answer but look for company's who are 'hungry for business' these usually offer cheaper insurance because they want to get in to a particular market i.e car insurance / bike insurance
Classic insurance normally has quite tight stipulations like driver/s must be over 21, restricted mileage etc etc so may not be an option if you are travelling high mileages for race meetings.
The other problem is new drivers get tarred with the same brush, young, just passed test, irresponsible = high premium. The roads are also these days a busy place therefore risk of an accident is higher due to an increase of traffic and we are all guilty ( i think ) of trying to get from a-b as quickly (within the law ) as possible.
Just my 50p's worth.
Help ! I have turned into a rambling old git.
