Orion D48 charger

Has anybody else got one of these as i have just got one with no instructions , Are these chargers fully automatic as in auto cut off when cells fully charged ?
I charged a set of smc 3000R (6 cells ) and they seemed to get very hot ! is this normal ?

Looks like you are using an old type nicad charger on your ni-mh batteries, nicad batteries need a higher fall back voltage or delta peak so your battery will get very hot if you use this charger on your ni-mh cells. I would stop using it coz you may find your cells exploding with this type if charger.

Am i right in thinking the only difference between the D48 and the D114 is the amount of cells that can be charged ?
Im not doubting your reply re wrong charger for nimh but the instructions say ok for these or maybe i have an old model ???

It's likely that the NiMH cells are knackered (10 years old by now), which is why they are getting so hot.

Yeah the other one will charge 1 to 14 cells that's the only real difference. I had both the D4-8 and the D1-14 back when I was running Sanyo RC2000 cells. When we started running ni-mh cells you needed to have a charger with adjustable delta peak, your Orion charger does not have that function. You will end up cooking your cells.

Thanks for that mate , New charger ordered now so will leave well alone until it gets here , I didnt mean to question your experience but i couldnt understand what the difference was as according to the instructions i included in my post referred to being able to charge both but advice now heeded and i thank you for taking the time to reply , Very much appreciated :thumbsup:

Here is what you should be setting your charger at for your 3000mAh cells (green box) you can see the big difference in the fallback voltage from the Ni-MH cells in red red box, also you never want to trickle charge a Ni-MH cell.
