View Full Version : Buggies at GERCC
Sup Dudes!
This forum is very small haha! Nethertheless, it seems a few people seem curious of buggies racing on friday nights so...
I've revived my old Yokomo MR4BX from the top of the shelf and it is now in full race winning order ;) Sadly not many other buggies seem to be running, there were 2 this week just gone but im not sure if they will stick at them if a few more people don't get their old scrap out!
Ill be running mine certainly for the next championship regardless of there being a specific heat for them or not, so if anybody feels the urge to race one, be assured there will be another one there :)
Ill upload some photos this evening of some cars i've owned over the years as a kind of name and shame exercise ;) and to get some colour onto the forum!

Great news ... I will hopefully soon be a regular with my current Kyosho cars and I'm going to be bringing my mate Adam along too, also Kyosho (what else???)

Hm, I'm tempted myself too. I'd have to buy a buggy though, although Jon's Losi 22 was definitely a tempting prospect, it's a great looking car. I would take a lot of pleasure in thrashing you with one of those Ed ;)
I have a spare Hobbywing 13T setup now too (plus that receiver Ed) so just need a rolling chassis. I might be up for it. Definitely going to stick with the HPI too though.

talking of spare recievers.... does anyone have a spare 40mhz Futaba rx? I think its an rj152e or something. Can any 2 channel 40mhz rx work with a Futaba transmitter? My buggy has intermittent forward action, no issues in reverse. I have changed the esc and motor but the effects are the same so must be either rx or tx. Have tried alternative transmitter rx combo and it runs fine. Would like to try alternative rx so I can eliminate/identify the faulty part.

I've got a few 40MHz RXs that I've used with Futaba TXs in the past, just need to find them!

@ Roger,
would be good if you could bring them along on Friday.
I might need to take them away to try on the buggy if that is ok with you. Running two cars I won't have the time to test the buggy aswell.:(

AM and FM issues aside (these are not interchangeable even if you are on the same band) there are to my knowledge at least 2 common encoding methods for 40MHz FM RF. Futaba have PPM and PCM which is a standard some other manufacturers use. As far as I know all of their car stuff is PPM, the PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) is reserved for the more expensive 35MHz air radios. I think the PPM method is what most other manufacturers use, I am most familiar with Hitec as that is what I used to run. I still have several Hitec receivers and a spare transmitter which I can bring down on Friday.
To be honest I would suspect the crystal before anything else though.

cheers dave,
are you saying the cheapo types will be compatable but the more expensive types won't due to the signal modulation technique incorporated. I'll change the crystals and see what happens. Will bring buggy on friday but as you are aware space in a Mr 2 is very minimal

just wondering whos coming on friday and what there racing

Simon,
I am saying I am pretty sure most 40MHz FM car radios run what Futaba call PPM. So they should be compatible. There may be a difference with KO as I think they have their own modulation, wouldn't be surprised if it is PCM. Sorry, re-reading it I realise that last post of mine was totally unclear.
Ryan,
s'appenin gangsta? I can't comment for anyone else but I am coming on Friday and will be racing my HPI in touring, with a load more new kit on it if I can get the work done in time. Oh yeah and Simon said he was coming too.
RogerM
21-09-2011, 11:22 AM
I've used the same recievers with Futaba PPM and KO radios so no problems there ... As for Friday hopefully, buggy if I can make it.

@ Ryan,
if I remember I'll charge it up and bring it along. It's just that the memory taken up by a 6minute video is massive and it takes an age to upload onto youtube on a wireless laptop!
See you on Friday night with or without camera :)

Simon, my car was still set up for proper off-road so was FAR from ideal on such a small and tight high grip carpet track! Was fun though.
As for onboard footage feel free to provide a solution to that and I'll be happy to strap it into my car for next time :)

I do have an original Scorpion BUT that isn't what I was refering to .. Scorpion was my mid motored RB5 conversion (the first car available that could run mid or rear motor, 3 or 4 gear transmission ... designed back in 2009!!) I sold a few of.
Car is awesome, you'll have to have a look and maybe a drive if we can get your Tx bound to her.

Hahaha, excuses excuses roger haha! Well, all I can say is ill very much enjoy the pleasure of thrashing you all into last century, which is where your 2wd cars belong haha!
Oh and if someone could bring some spare carpet as we need some to protect the carpet when we land of jumps?! That would be good though :)

Was certainly interesting on Friday ... no way I can compete with you guys with my normal droop-tastic off-road setup. For my return I will be building up a set of shocks to significantly reduce droop (by at least 10mm off the front and 15mm of the rear!!!!!)
Was still fun (and valuable info too)

Hi Guys,
What sort of a track do you have for off roaders over in Gloucester? Carpet? Slippy? Any features? jumps, mats etc?

It's the TC track with a few little hops thrown in so all carpet and tight n twisty

No I think just scared :-) gota come mills as your the only one with offroad knowlage n might b able to poit us in the right direction as Gordy really wasn't helping yes2day, couldn't make his own car work yet alone other people's lol where you finish every race gord?
And don't say you almost beat me in the final because everyone knows it don't matter if you win my a inch or a mile winnings winning ;-)
RogerM
07-11-2011, 12:34 PM
LOL .... Kidderminster is the best off-road track in the country IMHO and I've been a member there for quite a number of years so hardly being a traitor to support my own club.
As for scared .. :D
I really hope to make it to Ledbury when you guys are there BUT I have to do what is best for the cars and at the moment I am doing a lot of development work on the 2wd and thus need it to be on a representative track (i.e. similar grip to the majority) and as Ledbury's great track is fairly high grip I'd not be learning as much there.
Soon gents, soon :)
Gunter
07-11-2011, 01:07 PM
Well boys I think that means as mills to scared to come to us we'll hav to go on a road trip ;-)
And development needs to be done on all levels of grip and traction, I'm sure Ledbury would test how good the car is over a bumpy surface so might be more worth ya time than you think :-)
My car needs development for bumby bloody ground! But had a grate day trying but loooong way off the pace

If your planning on making the trip to Kidderminster then what better meeting to go to than this
http://www.oople.com/forums/showthread.php?t=85131
Whilst the comments about Ledbury being a valuable testing place also then I could not agree more but there is a basic rule of thumb I follow "It's easier to tune grip out than to magic some out of nowhere" hence I prefer to do my initial testing on a lower and / or varied grip surface like Kidderminster.
Once you have a car that works at a place like Kidderminster it will work everywhere with just a minimal amount of tuning!
I really hope to get over to Ledbury for some of their other winter series rounds, especialyl as the track is insanely high grip even when soaking wet!
Who ever said Ledbury is bumpy needs to go to a few other places (Hinckley springs immediately to mind) as I can tell you as far as my big bore equiped Lazer is concerned Ledbury might as well be a bowling green :D
Hope to make it back to club in the next couple of weeks, time is sadly my enemy at the moment :(

Simon, I have no experience of that motor so can't help. I am showing up tonight with a 9.5 geared 7.8 if that gives you any indication. I might well find I drop a tooth or two as well from there if the track is tight as it is SO SO SO small.
Remember that you need to bring your car with the diff out so I can go through it with you as I promised. I am aiming to be on site for doors open but want to get involved with the track build too as it was really late before we got rolling last week.

18-11-2011, 12:28 PM
@ RogerM,
I dismantled and rebuilt the diff last weekend and used non kit grease. I think the main noise is coming from the spur gear (seems to run a little off centre. When I tried to tighten the diff I had lots of screw movement so I doubt that sanding back the nut holder by 0.5mm has been detrimental. I'll bring the buggy tonight and if you get the chance you can have a go at setting the diff tension for me.
Cheers
