the only essential upgrade on a madrat are a full set of bearings and to fit alloy shocks (second hand b4 shocks etc).
The kit shocks are no good for racing at all.

All 1/10th scale off road tyres should fit fine, schumacher, fastrax, proline etc

Ansmann X2 or big bore shocks are also very good, if you have the money to buy them...

IMO if your getting a madrat, bearings, shocks, just buy an X2

Carbon towers and alloy c hubs are expensive luxuries, not essential upgrade

Someone might be able to correct me but as far as I can see you don't need to buy complete shocks, parts 125000465\125000466 (front and rear shock bodies) and 125000430 (plastic parts) are all you need. Everything else can come from the kit shocks.

This is where I got our bearings for my son's Mad Monkey

Certainly can be done like that. Keeps everything the same geometry wise, also people have fitted the 3 racing Lazer Zx-5 shocks which can be had off e-bay for cheap. I think they fit straight on with the standard mounting hardware.

I have a mad rat and the essentials are brushless if you got the brushed one, Lipo battery and charger, ball race the diff, upgrade the idler gear, change from the stock slipper and spur gear to the associated b4 ones (the spur needs a little adjustment but is better) and upgrade your shocks to the big bores or if money is tight buy 2nd hand associated b4 ones as they fit right on. And finally upgrade your bearings and stick some schumacher tyres on it and your set to go

or do what i did.. (especially if funds are tight)
buy the 95mm shocks for the rear 201000039 (around than a tenner a pair)
buy the 75mm shocks for the front 201000037 (again around a tenner a pair)
a pack of 2mm spacers (or some suitable washers to do the job)

either swap the shock internals for the kit ones (like i did), or just fit the bottom eyelets from the kit shocks to the shocks i listed above & jobs a good un

you will need the spacers to give you the required off-set on the shock towers. the standard spring kits (option parts) for the rat also fit on these shocks. You could also go for the 85mm shocks (201000038) for the front if you want to do some tinkering.
