View Full Version : RB5 Brass Bulkhead at last!

Hi
My old man finally got round to sorting out my brass bulkhead. It fits fine and weighs 40g, so a little more than the 30g of lead i was currently running. I haven't raced it yet but will feed back when i have. It is an exact replica of the kit item including the 25/30 deg kick up options.

If anyone would like one then send me a PM or reply here. Price will be £20 inc postage or £21 if you want it recorded delivery.

Apologies for pictures, i have no idea how to do close ups well!

Thanks to everyone who has replied to me. Just a little more info.

I'm happy to ship abroad as the RB5 seems a lot more popular abroad than in the UK judging by the enquiries!
price will be around £21 including basic airmail or £25 for insured, signed for airmail.

Availability will hopefully be in a few weeks time. Anyone else interested drop me a line and i will pass on the final quantity to my father next week sometime.

thanks

unfortuntely due to work load my old man had to shelve them. If he gets a quiet period then he may well make some, but as he is barely covering costs with them his priority has to go to his main contract work.
Sorry.
i will post again if there is any change.

Kim - i sent you an email as you requested, i assume you didn't receive it?

Is there anyone willing to sell their metal bulkhead? please drop me a pm.

Why do you need this? Is it common that the original brakes? Or is it for the extra 10g?

jim76
18-07-2008, 10:08 PM
there is no problem with the original in terms of strength. This was designed purely for the additional weight to save cramming in weights that may fall out during a race.

Supergreg
19-07-2008, 07:09 AM
yep, and as my original is broken, I was thinking of getting the metal one.

jim76
19-07-2008, 08:08 PM
there is an alloy one available, details in another kyosho rb5 thread. But this doesn't add any weight over the original so not really worth the additional cost.

wouldn't it be easier to go to a company and order a 100 of them to be made and sell them on? Either via a distributer of kyosho goods? it seems a simple enough job

cut blank, mill out profile the blank, drill pivot holes, drill counter sunk holes.
Just send a 2d engineering drawing with specs and tolerances that don push the cost up but don't compromise the quality of the product.

A few things, brass is expensive and it's not that easy to produce this part for a good price. And you'd need kind of a garantee that all 100 units will be sold, and trust me 100 units is a lot of selling to be made. So even though I could make them I'm not even gonna think about it.

jim76
23-10-2008, 10:20 PM
exactly, brass isn't cheap. And to make it worth while you would have to order a fair few. I had enquiries from over 20 people, majority in Europe, not UK. So shifting 100 would be pretty tricky!

jim76
23-10-2008, 10:22 PM
oh, and to answer the initial question. With the credit crunch looming and work slowing down, the old man might have a bit more time to knock some up. I'll give him a prod.

By the way Could you ship my order to Norway by any chance?
Pm me please.

I know that Fab, but it seem like a good mod, surely by pulling a few favours;) we could get a limited run of 100 sold with the option to reorder, you just need to to get a deposit order list set up for a 100 orders. A simple excel sheet and bit of advertising on the forums and maybe redrc, would get the orders in....

Hi mate.. has there been any possibility to make any more of these? I would be interested in having two off you.

..or if you have none available.. could you point me in the right direction to where i could get my hands on one?

any help is appreciated. this is a great idea to add weight to the front.

Hi Hi,

I would like to have 1 if you can ship internationally.

Can I suggest a 4 x 3mm or 4mm hole be drill between the 4 screw holes to be secure to the chassis. Then, steel grub screw can be use to varies the weight.

The swedish company www.ghea.se, represented by http://www.rymartracing.co.uk/ in the U.K are currently making such bulkheads and other parts for the Ultima as well. Keep a look out.

yes, i had emailed them earlier in the week.. and they said they should have some within the month, great result! cant wait to get the bulkhead, so i can get rid of those silly adhesive weights.

my old man has the original plastic kit part at present, so i'm hoping he may have some in a week or so.

jim76
02-03-2009, 05:04 PM
I have a couple of prototype parts in the post from my father made using a new jig he has knocked up. I'll verify they fit perfectly then he will be running off a larger batch for me ready for early next week.

These parts retain the original option of 25 or 30deg kick up at the front and remove the need for the thin plastic wafer used in the kit. Each weigh in at around 40g. This weight can be tailored by removing/drilling some of the excess material in the middle of the 4 mounting screws.

These will sell for £22 inc postage.

I was having a discussion in another forum with other folks that the shim might really matter. And the original bulkhead might be 2.5 degree incline.

Trying to understand when you said shim is not neccessary but you still can flip for 25 or 30 degree.

jim76
03-03-2009, 11:58 AM
basically the body of the bulkhead is thicker than the kit original by the thickness of the shim, but it still retains the incline so you can swap kick up angles.

i haven't come across anyone that thinks the shim is important, why it couldn't be moulded in the original part i have no idea.

RogerM
03-03-2009, 12:18 PM
The shim corrected the hingepin centre height when changing from 25 to 30 degree castor, thus keeping the roll centre correct.

It could not be moulded into the part as there are 2 shims required, one thicker than the other, to correct for both castor options (although why the thiner shim could not have been part of the moulding and then add / remove a thin shim as required is beyond me ... would save on the confusion as to which shim to run with which setting too!!!!!)

jim76
03-03-2009, 02:15 PM
sorry, to clarify. Roger is right about the two spacers. What we have done is make the body 0.5mm thicker removing the need for the thinner shim. If you run the car with 25deg kick up you can simply add the thin shim, instead of adding the thicker one. As most people run with 30deg it will make the shims obsolete.

hope that makes it a bit clearer!

Top man ...... I'll be ordering one if my tennant ever pays their rent!!!!

jim76

OK, sorry for delay, my PC was playing silly buggers and had to be re-installed. And to make things worse they have banned Oople at work, disaster. Now i have to earn my salary

Anyway, pics of the first couple of bulkheads. Apologies for quality, have a new camera phone and no idea how to do close ups yet.

As stated, these are a direct replacement for the kit item, and remove the need for the thinner 0.5mm shim. Not sure on exact weight, i will add that tomorrow when i borrow the post office digital scales! The previous version was 40g, so should be pretty similar.

I have another 13 coming early next week. Am happy to ship abroad but it will obviously add a little to the cost. These are £22 shipped in the UK. Can do cheque or paypal (ideally gift payment to avoid fees).

Roger, one of these has your name on if you want it?
