Why would it need lowering?

This is Ryan Maifield car from the Worlds this year.

http://www.oople.com/rc/photos/worlds2011/day8/mai/OOP_8649.jpg

It's basically having the wing mounted on the lower of the two sets of holes on the rear tower.

Hiya mick
Thanks for the deliverys recently!

Btw
This mod apparently makes the wing quite loose not tried it yet though
What's the blue bit holding them together off anyone know?

Uses b4 wing mounts! Won't take to many hard landings!

Are they?
I thought they were chopped b44 ones?

I'm running cut down B44 mounts with enough left pointing down to give support against the top deck/tower mount. I did have a failure at Worksop RD1, but was easily fixed with a nifty addition of two 4-40 nuts dremel'd into the mounts. It aint moving anywhere now!!

I'll grab a photo or two of how it's running now and upload hopefully tomorrow.

BTW, the blue part on Maifield's wing mount is a B44 battery post to give extra rigidity.

What are the benefits of doing this?

What are the benefits of doing this?

More rear end I'm guessing
And more aero dynamic
Jumps better
More???

If you lower it, wouldnt you get less rear grip?
You'd be able to run a little quicker but a lot looser IMHO.

Scroll down to "Brent AE B44 wing tip" for a video where Brent Thielke explains the mod.

Too bad the quality of the video is one of the worse I have seen in quite a while. But at least you can hear the explanations and luckily there are pics with good quality of the mod like the one posted in this thread of Maifields car.

Don't think I'll be bothering (with the "mod", not the video)

I'm sure it would make it loose on the track though.
It will be very interesting to here the findings.

Really Gaz?

Guessing so!
Jumps better and more aerodynamic in the air
That's why they did it for the silly big jumps at worlds :)

Just done it on my B44, took 5 mins, just take the wing mounts off, line up with the lower bolt hole, stanley knife off the desired amount and pop a longer bolt through and job done!

With the wing mounts resting on the shock tower brace it feels fairly sturdy but I may do what Sleigh has done and put some small 4-40 nuts in the wing mounts.

I am going to fit a brace between the two wing mounts, a bit of a chassis post from my AE L4 12th car and a couple of bolts.

I'll post a pic up once finished, I'll race it next Wednesday and report back

Here we are guys, pics as promised: As per my other post, longer bolts through shock tower brace, cut down the wing mounts and made a brace from 12th chassis spacer and a couple of blue washers.

Well gave it a run last night, didnt break and car seemed to jump well and seemed balanced in the air.

The jumps were not massive so probably not a fair test but so far so good.......

As said before the wing modification was done after the Worlds warmup because of the big jumps and the random gusts of wind at finland.
Excuse the grubby car.

What advantages does lowering the rear wing have?

Cheers

I don't think that this modification would really change the handling of the car.
If it would do so, then i think the World Campion 2011 would also use the wing mounted low- but Cav didn't.

Probably it's just a personal thing and more about the looks...

But cavalieri had a 6" wing instead of 6.5" that most others used. Maybe the wind and big jumps was not such a big of an issue for the narrower wing?
