Well guys, I am over the moon to release news of what might be the most unique off-road racing experience seen in recent years.
2012 will see the launch of the U.K's first ever urban warehouse based off-road racing series, with the launch race meeting planned for late January we are super excited to share with you some spy shots of the secured venues. We are very aware of date clashes within drivers commitments so we can assure you that this event will be staged with no direct clashes to other national or regional race meetings. We have several major manufacturers interested in supporting this event so our administration and infastructure will be top class.
The meeting will be run over 1 full day with both micro 1/18th & 1/16th scale heats and the traditional 1/10th scale indoor off-road heats. The really cool part of this racing event will be the location.
Urban X will take place in a spacious urban warehouse environment in central Birmingham. Multi-surface track conditions will be seen with carpet and polished industrial flooring. We will be employing a dedicated team to design and construct the track features/jumps etc.
We will have a large well appointed pit area with live power points and pit tables supplied. Our goal with this event is to bring the culture of off-road indoor racing into a new environment whilst also giving you, the race community an opportunity to visit the second city during an exciting days race activities.
Spy shots of the secured venues:

At first I would like to gauge the potential interest in this meeting and see who may like to attend?. The venue boasts amazing access from major motorway networks, full food facilities, toilets and parking facilities, and a spacious spectators area for friends and family to relax and enjoy the fun. Central hotel and transport networks are 5 minutes walking distance from this amazing venue.
http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd378/teamblackcountry/space2-1.jpg
Racers will be welcome to run several classes during the day and our goal is to allow every attending driver or team ample time, space and track access to make this an amazing days racing.

Stay tuned for my information in the next few weeks and if you think you may like to attend this great day in the centre of the country, let us know

We would have been keen to run a 10th short course class but had very few requests. I understand that this thread had a few people mentioning a truck class but based on the 100 or so people who contacted me directly off all the forum posts we had to choose 10th buggy 2wd and 4wd, if I can collect a minimum of 10 drivers who want to book in and pay this weekend we will modify the schedule to accodate the class :) get pm'ing chaps, the offer is there if you want it?
We would ideally want to run all classes, but it has to be based on demand
Let us know :)

As some eagle eyed drivers may have noticed or heard on the grapevine...we think that we will be adding a control tyre to the list for 10th...Schuey mini spikes...we spoke with several lads after walking the venue this afternoon and the polished area is industrial smooth concrete...looks very clean and nice but spikes may well be needed...or go kamikaze and get those pins on anyway
Our aim is to create a very 'drivable' track but expect a few challenges with dramatic changes in elevation and surface ...it is off-road after all ey folks ;)

I ran my carisma at TIchfield with mini pins on and it would flip like crazy. Didn't have rally blocks at that point though. The standard tyres were so grippy you could flip the car adjusting your line on the straight!
Might be an excuse to race there this sunday with the mini 8 as I'm down south at the weekend.

I've run my 1:16 on astro a few times now and as long as the 'pile' of the astro isn't too lengthy we'll be ok. But the same applies for the 1:10 buggies, just not as bad.

As Phil has pointed out, no need to stress as the pile is short enough to let all scales wizz through the astro sections, we decided to include the astro sections to give you all something exciting! They will only feature in small sections to make it interesting :) fun times we hope

First time I'll have raced on astro with a 16th.... Can't wait!
is the conrete sealed or a bit dusty?
The concrete is sealed. Industrial style with a semi-shiny coating....again more of a featured surface change than loads of slippy, should make for some interesting corners when your line goes, carpet, slippy, astro strip, carpet!! Lol
I mean it is off-road after all ;)

Correct, but just so everybody remembers...as stated on booking in form, we are also allowing mini spikes on driven axle 2wd and all round 4wd...the slippy is not like ice but may prove interesting until the grip rises a bit during the meeting.
We can not wait to begin the actual track build guys!!, as promised, photos will be uploaded as we go this week.
Many thanks to all racers who have booked and paid this weekend!! It is filling up nicely now and all is set for a really nice day of relaxed but challenging racing for all attending.
Don't forget your pit tables and chairs folks, any racers with extra power extension leads we are suggesting you chuck them in as it looks like the pits are going to be busy....doors will be open with all welcome from 7:30...feel free to get in and settled from then on

Ok chaps we are at 71 drivers paid up and booked in by returning email booking forms :)
Booking in will close at 12:00 noon on Thursday to allow us time to process all drivers. There will be a reserve list as soon as we hit 80 drivers.
We are very happy and excited to see so many of you booking in to race with us. Its set to be a really fun, relaxed, and enjoyable day with a track that has that urban flavour! :D
Anybody who is yet to book in then feel free to email me at styleft@hotmail.co.uk
As previously mentioned, drivers are welcome to arrive at the venue from 7:30 and get settled in. We have brilliant amenities around us including a breakfast shop that does EVERYTHING you will need ;) we have a fully stocked newsagents, coffe shop, curry and snack cafe, great toilet facilities and secure parking about 10 yards from the venue.
You will approach from any journey down a road called Heath Mill Lane, look out for a stack of rusting crushed cars built as a wall! That's the carpark.
Any difficulties with finding us the type in Gibb Street, B9 4AA into sat navs/Google maps and look for the signs for The Custard Factory
Schumacher have supplied some really cool raffle prizes including some nice T-shirts, Lipo Charger, and some tools. Tickets for the raffle are £1.00 in the pits, so don't forget to jump in and grab a chance to win yourself some cool stuff :)
Let's make this already exciting event a real corker

If you check the area on Goggle maps, study the section of Heath Mill Lane that has Gibb Street ajoined to it. Gibb Street is notoriously difficult to see on Goggle Earth as it is under a railway bridge. When you find Gibb Street, and the intersection with Heath Mill Lane...the big warehouse directly at that junction is the one.
The carpark is directly adjacent, just over the road (Heath Mill Lane) from the warehouse. I hope that helps chaps?
Booking in has gone wild over the last few hours! Looks like it is going to be a full house. I am currently wrestling with red carpet and gaffer tape...I actually look like a giant human sized rasberry ripple!!

Just been down for a quick look as it's not far. The car park opposite is a pay and display ands it's £6 or so for 12hrs ands it open 24 hrs. I couldn't actually find the venue but I think there's a metal roller door on gibb street - is that the entrance?

Parking is free all around the venue, no more than 40 yards away. Every side road around the venue is free andvery close. The carpark is sucurity controlled hence the charge, few options for folks though :)
Stuart, can you tell you us where the door to the venue is please.
Will it be clearly signed?
There are so many different buildings I'm sure I won't be the only not sure where it is - especially if we're all trying to hunt out free parking.

If the building is still the Space2 warehouse it is in the corner by the bridge on Gibb street.
Go onto google maps. Put the streetmap man on just under the bridge at the junction of gibb st. Go forward into the corner, the road curves to the left but straight ahead and slightly to the right is a large metal gate and you can see a purple sign saying space2.
Well that's were it looks like it is.
There is no parking on Gibb st. (pedestrian street) or Heath Mill lane so you have to go further into the industrial part. Lower trinity street is 1 hour parking.

Hi Stuart
I would just like to thank you personally for such an amazing event.
You jumped in at the deep end and put on an 80+ person event for not one but three class's
1/10 2wd and 4wd
1/16 4wd
The track layout was great and only needed minor adjustments through the day.
It was also great to have the micros and 1/10 boys side by side.
I really hope you put more events on through year as you really put you heart into everything you do with RC.
The only downside was you promised the heat sheets in 8mins
And you over run by 33sec lol :-)
Catch up with you soon
Cheers

Firstly thank you to Stuart and and his crew for today. A very very relaxed days racing.
For your first attempt at putting a race day on I take my hat off to you. For not only having the balls to get stuck in where some dare to tread but to run a chilled days that was utter fun with no agro or attitude that can surround the one day events.
Also not forgetting how much money you must have shelled out in the first place. Well done for a great day, for putting you money where your mouth was so to speak and to already be looking ahead at making the next event better. Oscar and I Drove 125 miles each way and wouldn't hesitate to do it again for the next one. Cracking day even if I did only finish 2 races all day and gone through a couple of packs of wishbones.

So, here we are guys after the first ever Urban X...
Firstly I would like to express my sincere thanks to every racer who trusted my concept, came to race at my first meeting, and also made the day a wonderful exhibition of the true spirit and meaning of our wonderful sport. All of you are a real credit to the scene.
The amazing thing about the experience we all shared today was that less than 2 years ago I was away from the sport. This break from racing lasted nearly 16 years, and I am so very grateful for the support and guidance I have had to help me settle back in to the community.
Creating and running your own race meeting whether at club level or larger scale is a really character building experience, I salute every single race organiser and club chairman across our scene who goes through this experience that I have had over the last 2 months.
Urban X would not exist in concept nor reality if it wasn't for the people who have made the first event such a great experience. I asked many many people for feedback, and ALL points have been humbly noted and will be acted upon immediately to further enhance my upcoming plans for what may be Urban X Part 2:
The following points of very important feedback are planned for revision....
Bigger track space that will accommodate all classes more comfortably and ultimately give fun and exciting racing for all attendees.
Greater track technicalities and challenges.
Deeper consideration for the nature of mixed ability heats and how all drivers can compete within races that suit their ability level.
I would like to offer my public and heartfelt thanks to the following people, without whom, Urban X would not have been born or taken it's first tentative steps into the off-road culture:
Miles, Steve & Tom for their event planning and management assistance
Darren Johnson, Dave Williams, Stuart Macdonald, Tony Bishop, Phil Sleigh, Andy Mountford, Andy Funge, & Steve Haines for their amazing help during today, and also making me feel that I am part of a really inspirational race club. I was over the moon to be asked to sit on your club committee guys.
Jimmy and Vicky Storey for bringing me into the oOple family of staff and trusting my judgment and journalism skills.
Robin Schumacher, Tony Evdoka, Kev Lee & Simon Osbourne for their experience, mentoring and product support.
Danny Fisher & The Custard Factory for a brilliant venue.
Andy Jones for his advice and knowledge.
My family for putting up with living in an RC dominated environment for the last few years.
Carl Arrowsmith for his support and professional skills with race control and timing gear.
Dan Holmes and Joe Cockill for bringing that Pitside retail magic to our event.
Rob Chalmers and Simon Choc for their photography and film skills during the event.
and last but not least....every single person that raced around the track that I built from scratch....it will get bigger and better very soon guys.
As I sit and type this post I realise that my passion and commitment to RC is vastly overshadowed by my passion and inspiration for people....you all made this possible, and I thank you all for helping me create Urban X.
So, deep breath, who's up for Urban X Part 2 folks?...I have a feeling that it won't be long before we all go for it once again
Racing is the one thing that will always strip away the constraints we are all dogged by in this crazy modern world...and ultimately bring hundreds of like-minded people together to enjoy a bit of exciting competition, learn new skills, meet new people & see new places....long may it continue.
Peace...Stuart 'Style One' Styles

First thing i would like to say Stu is well done to you and all who contributed to put this event on!.
It takes massive effort and commitment to do what you have done!
You have already know from the feedback what needs to be changed, so enough said, but one thing i wud say is don't forgot the kids who are learning the hobby! They are the future of our chosen hobby and for me the track had sufficient difficulty. How many drivers of all levels did'nt make a mistake? Not many.
You had some great drivers there who will make most tracks look easy. A big plus at any meeting. They set the standard for all racers.
Once again, well done. Is just what the West Mids needs, it could grow to add to some of the great events we have round the country.

There was lots of filming going on by Stu's mate including on-car footage, so guessing that's being edited for release.
Darren Bloomfield won 2WD, Phil Sleigh won micro with a ballistic missile of a car!, think Phil also won 4WD but not 100% as had to leave before the end

By the way, loved the rolling starts in the heats, it was cool trying to time your start with a clear track in front of you......like starting an F1 qualifying lap!

Really looking forward to seeing how well the on-car video footage came out I Know it was fun shooting it - just so happy Go-Pros are built tough!
i think alot of the 1/10th drivers felt that the track was just too small (me included). However, despite this, everbody seemed to really have enjoyed the day and would go back again. I myself thought the track was great to drive on despite its size and want to thank stu for organising it all. I cant imagine putting on a race meeting is easy and i think for his first meeting he did great. Please do another Stu !.

Very true, I was talking to Stu and did say the track looked tiny when we walked in........but, it was actually one of the nicest indoor tracks I've driven on in years  looks were definitely deceptive in this case :)
count the Mansfield crew in for the next one

Think you have hit the nail on the head, think everyone thought it was tight on first impression but can not remember there being any major crashes or instances, credit to racers etc as there was a mix of abilities through out the racing. Thought the general conversation around the pits was also first class and pleasant and nice to see people who you know the name but not the face
Many thanks

Stu,thanks for a great day, I've not been racing for long and this was my second outing away fom my club. Can't believe I won the group C 4wd final and to top that 2nd prise in the raffle. I needed some more tools as my car always seems to be in bits LOL.
When are the videos out?

That looks good:thumbsup:. maybe quite small, but that can be more enjoyable as you can lern it a lot faster and realy enjoy your racing. as in a lot of cases with one off meetings you maybe only do 50 laps of the track all day,for me (as I'm a bit slow:blush:) that hardly gives me a chance to get the hang of it.let alone set the car up:lol:
