Pinion stuck onto motor shaft

Like the title mentions... I've got a pinion that's stuck on the shaft of my motor. I managed to move it slightly, but unfortuntely to the wrong side :lol: WD40 doesn't seem to help and I don't have a lot of tools at my disposal right now.

I was thinking of taking the motor to the workshop at school, putting the pinion in the bench vice and tapping on the shaft to get it out. I was wondering if you have other ideas to do it? :)

The motor is off the car yeah, it makes access a lot easier.

If possible apply some heat to the pinion first from say a lighter or similar then use two medium flat blade screwdrives opposite each other under the pinion and try to lever it of using the motor case as a support. Long nose pliers or wire cutters may also fit under the pinion.

use a pair of side cutters under the pinnon and use the leaverge to slide it off.

:lol: ah ok! Well, I did take the grub screw out but the pinion is still stuck on my motor...

Whereas the taps did work it seems the leverage of the pliers doesn't. I'm calling it a day now, I've disassembled a full buggy and sorted the parts, and I completely cleaned and rebuilt the gearbox of another one. Just the pinion issue to solve - a nice job for tomorrow! Thanks for the advice so far, I'll give them all a try - unless it comes off at the first attempt :)

If it doesn't move with a small amount of heat and force your idea of putting the pinion in a vice and using a punch to remove the shaft from it is probably the safest for the motor. Tried to lever a stuck pinion off a brushed motor once... managed to move the shaft in the armature about 10mm before I realised it wasn't the pinion moving :blush:

Ok, small update :) Thursday night I managed to pull off the pinion with the little help of a second person. Like Checkered Flag Racing suggested two screw drivers opposite to each other and a firm hold on the motor did the job. I needed a second person as I didn't have a bench vice to hold it (plus, a bench vice may scratch the nice anodizing on the motor :p)

Thanks a lot for your help and suggestions, I can now do the final steps in the rebuild of my TRF201's gearbox :)

Hi im sure MuchMore sell a pinion puller for exactly this purpose if that helps :D

They do but we never have the tools we require when we most need them

Easy fix for this is to clamp the pinion in a vice then place an old allen key onto the motors shaft and gently tap it with a hammer to push the shaft out of the pinion. Any of the other suggestions may damage the motor at least this way all that will get damaged is the pinion :thumbsup: Or as otherwise suggested a pinion puller but its one of those tools you will probably only use once.
