I have in the past used custom colour flip paint it doesnt stick as well as normal paint so would be well worth keying the shell first. I scrub all of my shells with a brillo pad first and back them with plastikote scratch proof clear helps to stop the paint flaking off hope this helps. :)

I have used that tamiya paint you are on about , it was in my lhs so I decided to give it a go , first impressions wasn't good but the more I look at it the better it gets ! As for the backing , yeah you have to back with black, I did try a few other colours out but they didn't work.
I will try to post some pics tomo, although I'm not sure how it will show up in a photo.
As for hand can spray I wouldn't use any other brand than tamiya, it's expensive but always seems to give good results. I'm sure people will disagree tho

Tamiya paint is the best, I wish they still sold jars of the Polycarbonate paint so i could put it through my Airbrush, fantastic stuff in the cans too.

I've also used the tamiya stuff in the past and it works fine, just follow the instructions on the tin. Works great

I seen some of the tamiya jars on a site a few days ago but can't remember where, are you sure they haven't started doing it again?

When I saw this yesterday I looked on the Tamiya sites, both UK and Japan, can't seem to see it in jars any more, maybe it's just old stock you saw ?
My mate used to paint stuff by squirting aerosols into little jars, thinning it a bit more and putting them through his airbrush, that would work but the thinners might get to you...

Depending what and how you can get hold of paint the AutoAir GemChameleon will produce the same effect, it's uber expensive though, if fact it's the same price as the solvent based house of kolor stuff, which you should be able to get in small amounts if you search around, how much that will stick to the shells without a flex aid additive in it is anyone's guess though and it I was paying that much for paint i'd want it to stick ! The autoair will deffo stick !

The flip looks great especially on the touring car.
As for the airbrush setup, cheap gear is available but keep in mind thats what it is and its the same as anything "you get what you pay for", that being said a cheap kit would be great for testing whether its something you want to get into and upgrade the stuff as you go along, check out ebay for a cheap setup, they normally have a few deals on there.

8th down on this page Clicky 1 (http://www.everythingairbrush.com/acatalog/Harder___Steenbeck_Kits.html) is less than £150.
Unless you have your own regulated air supply in which case 4th & 5th down on this page Clicky 2 (http://www.everythingairbrush.com/acatalog/Gravity_Feed.html) is only £30 and if you phone them up I'm sure they'll do a good deal for you.
