Paypal 's fee is related to your specific country and the policy .

IF you are a USA User , fee is the least - 2.9% , no withdraw charge ，if you are Europe user fee is 3.9% i think with withdraw fee .

Asia users are charged the most , 3.5% + $35

Sorry about kicking this off - and then getting it wrong...proving maths and Bushmills do not mix.

I was trying to work out how much to pay someone such that they got exactly the amount agreed, so that I covered the fees. It's not as easy as it looks, because, as was pointed out, you have to pay fees on the extra you added on to pay fees.

I'll have it sussed in a jiffy, I'm trying to get my maths up to scratch for my OU studies, this is good practice.

Please take this in the spirit it is intended.

If the amount of money sent = S and the amount of money received = R

Then

R = S - 0.2 - (S x 3.6%)
So

R + 0.2 = S(1 - 0.036)

Which means that

S = (R + 0.2) / 0.964

That is all assuming the 3.6% is charged on the 20p fixed charge which I assume it will be.

Much easier to use the web site to calculate it for you.
And yes I am a bit of a geek.

So you don't pay the percentage on the 20p.
That changes things completlely.

all i do is if i buy an item for £20 and agree to pay fees, then i add 4% and inform the seller what im paying so i would pay him £20.80
if i pay by gift i use my bank account then i or the seller dont get charged for fee's.(but you have no protection so only use if you know the seller)

Paypal extended the cover they provide for eBay to all purchases (non-gift), eBay or not, within the last 2 year iirc. It was probably to attract web retailers to use them in preference to credit cards.

There is nothing wrong with Paypal gifts for purchasing, so long as the buyer isn't thick! Sure, maybe gifting to someone you dont know is a risk, so pay the fees until you do know them.

I give all my buyers the option - I send them my address and say its entirely up to you - you canvsee my trusted feedback so you can save a quid or two and do gift, or you can do it normally for coverage - so I leave it up to customers.

So far, only 1 out of the 7 or 8 trades chose to do it with fees as opposed to gift. So I guess people like saving money if it is with somneone reputable.

I sent £50 from my wifes paypal account/bank account to my own paypal account as a gift (coz lets face it i can't rip myself off:woot:) and it still charged my wife's account £1.90!!!
Yet i have sent money before and not been charged at all!!!

I don't mind the charges as long as there consitent, i never know when i get charged if at all.

I totally agree with Col when it comes to asking for gift payments (no-one is covered)

The buyer should ask for the amount they want so that everyone is covered.....you wouldn't buy a supercar and pay by gift (i.e no warranty/proof of purchase)

Lets face it we all save a fortune on eBay/advertising fees by using this site, so i personally feel everyone should accept loosing the PayPal % when they sell an item. If someone wants to send the payment as a gift thats there choice.

True problem is not here !

True problem is when the Order is $1000 , IF you pay the receivee $1000 , He only can receive $960 , $40 was charged ! . And so : Who pay such a high fee ?

Sender pay or receiver himself afford ??

Remember if you have 10 Orders of $1000 via Paypal , That is at least $300 fee !!!

They are consistant - as it depends on th status of your account. When my friend was round buying my phone recently she was doing it by gift in front of me, and she was going to be charged £8 for sending £230.

However, whenever I send money, I never get charged. Perhaps its because I have had several thousands go through it, or that I am double verified by Paypal (set up verification and a second verification when you have had £5K through your account) so who knows. But I never get charged for it and you say you haven't yet your wife does, so must be to do with account status perhaps?
