I'm moving to Bristol in the next few weeks and was wondering if anyone knew of any racing in that area?
I currently race 1/10 electric off road but might be tempted to get something different if there's none of that racing nearby.
Thanks

Hi there...

Bristol itself is a little bit of a black hole for offroad...but just outside there are a couple of options.

I live in Weston-super-Mare and know this little predicament all too well!

Literally just the other side of the severn bridge is the Caldicot club (www.caldicotrcracers.co.uk/ (http://www.caldicotrcracers.co.uk/)), we have section on here to see what's going on, we're indoors every friday night, and run 1/10th and 1/16th offroad. We've been pretty busy lately, getting around 6-7 full heats of racers every week, very mixed abilities so there's a good race to be had for anyone, from newbies to regulars at the nationals....mostly 10th 2wd's of late, but always 4wds and micros as well. Quite a few from this side of the bridge make the trip, so your not alone there! Would be less than 30 mins from Bristol.

As for outdoors, Caldicot only runs outdoors once a year for it's welsh regional round, but...keep your eyes peeled as there is a new offroad track being built in Weston...which will help fill the void a little...more info on that will be released shortly once we get the final go and get things under way.

After that you have Tiverton, about 45 mins south from me in Weston, so probably about an hour or so from Bristol itself...depending on where abouts you end up. Great little club, well worth the trip, they have a section on here you can check out.

Then about 45-60 mins from Bristol, again into Wales you've got Talywain...out in a valley near Pontypool, has been used for nationals over the last few years, though not got one this year...the track there is um....improving all the time shall we say...they are trying to cultivate more a of a regular club following, which they've not had in recent years, so they'd be worth a look too.

Another club (though slightly more rough and ready and the moment) around that welsh area, and slightly closer to you than Taly, is trying to set up a better track now too....GNR....not a lot of info about that currently, but watch the WRCA section in here for more details as they get going this year too.

Hope that helps, look forward to seeing another new face in the area!!!

Can't wait,be good to have more off road buggy tracks in the south west

Let's get back the old days of the SWORDS

There will soon be an outdoor off-road track in Weston I believe and myself and Rob at South West RC have something else we are looking at.

We may be able to use a large split level warehouse for racing in the village of Yatton (it about 9500 square feet of floor space). Depending on how our meeting goes on Monday we may decide to build an indoor astro track. We will make sure racing is on a different week or day to the outdoor racing as we dont want to affect them (plus we want to race there) and it will only be a temporary thing while the warehouse is sold (unless we get enough interest to offer them good rent).

I'll keep you posted and update on Monday.

Sounds promising Alan, and reminds me, I never dropped you that email after we spoke at the MK

Look forward to hearing more about Yatton though...sounds like a really good space you've found! Could be about twice the useful size of Caldicot, once you include all the random pitting areas we have, which could be great

A few bits of potential by the sounds of it then...all of a sudden the South West isn't sounding so bleak...lets see how it works out now :D

We should all chat sometime and see how we can make all these things work together the best way possible....and find enough racers to support it all properly :)

We also race buggoies outdoors during the summer at Chippenham (www.cmcc.org.uk) - during the winter we run on-road indoors.

Other mostly on-road clubs nearby are at Gloucester, Frome and Melksham, and during the summer there is one of the best outdoor on-road tracks in the country at Cotswold (Kemble).

I said I would keep you posted on how our meeting went at the unit we were looking at so here's an update. We have the keys!!!

We are now looking into getting some astroturf and clearing the place up (not much involved, just a lick of paint and a sweep). We are looking to start racing the first sunday in April (1st) but it will all depend on how we get on with the clearing up. Just a warning that we do not currently have any timing gear and to start with we will have to do manual timing. This shouldn't be an issue though as we don't expect that many drivers for the first meeting. I will start a new thread with address, date, time, race fees ect. when we have them sorted.

Great news...looking forward to some local racing!!

In terms of Astro...not sure what your plans are but maybe we could try and arrange jointly for that to happen both there and WORM as it will be called...moving it about isn't easy, so combining force's if you have a source might make it easier/cheaper for both!?!

We don't have a source yet but have people on the hunt. How about you?

Alan - South West RC
19-03-2012, 06:50 PM
Nothing yet, we have just started looking around to see whats available. If we can't get astro then we do have a source for carpet.

We are poping over in the next half an hour to start planning what needs doing as we are hoping to hold our first meeting on Sunday 1st April. Will all depend on how quickly we can get things sorted. Will be taking some pictures while we are there so will get them posted later hopefully.

Sounds good! Look forward to seeing pics...reckon we might be able to sort out the timing equipment problem for you too...we have that sorted for WORM...sure some agreement could be made to help out with that in some way!

Looks like a good size...exciting!!!

Track downstairs and pitting upstairs?

You able to knock out that central wall structure in the middle to make use of the whole downstairs for track area? Be ace if you can, assuming it's not load bearing, the upstairs does seem to be held by those metal posts rather than the blockwork?

Anyway, sure you have your plans...looking forward to seeing what you can turn it into...if you need any help give me a shout...don't have tons of time on my hands, especially trying to get the outdoor track sorted, but happy to help anyway I can...all for the good of racing locally!

1st of April is only a few weeks away too...good luck!! :-)

Plans are pitting downstairs and racing upstairs. The upstairs is big enough for a desent sized track and it's completely open with no columns or supports in the way. Also downstairs has power sockets everywhere for charging and the kitchen and toilets are downstairs.

The biggest issue we have at the moment is the astro turf. We are having trouble finding some thats cheap enough for us. We do have some rolls of carpet as a backup though if we can't get anything by the 1st.

Anyway keep an eye on the website as I will update with more pictures as we go :woot:

Have you worked out how.much weight it will be, 10 men 1 ton roughly,so double that then astro turf ????

blue_pinky
21-03-2012, 09:58 AM
Weight should be ok once it's up there and laid out...it'd be spread nicely over the area, my worry would be getting the astro up there, and moving it about once it's up there!

At anything up to a ton per roll...you'd use lifting equipment to deal with it ideally! Then many people to move it into place once it's in the right kind of area...it can be very heavy stuff...

I wonder if the carpet you have might be a better option if it's going to be upstairs? Though not quite the 'outdoors' feel your obviously going for, it might work out easier to deal with in general...look forward to seeing progress anyway :)

Have u got an address for the site, l'm working just down the road and dying for a peek !!

Alan - South West RC
21-03-2012, 11:12 AM
Need to get the address but its the unit on the oposite side of the road to the railway station in Yatton, used to be a garage called RPM and a forklift place before that. Rob's there from 3 and I should be there about 7 tonight.

http://binged.it/GHLpwK

I really hadn't given much thought to weight. Its a very well contructed mezanine as it used to have machines sat up there but astro might be to much. Maybe carpet is the answer :(

blue_pinky
21-03-2012, 12:27 PM
I thought that too...the structure looks good...lots of beams...as I said before though...don't think the weight would be an issue once it's laid...it's just getting in to place that would be the fun bit! There aren't any old forklifts hiding away in there are there? ;)

Bit early unless you want to try the wooden floor out ;)

Club will be Y.R.C.C. which is Yatton RC Car Club. Quite boring really but to the point. As for the venue I guess we could name the venue in the future, any ideas?

One thing to point out is that this is only a temporary thing. We can use it until it's sold which could takes months or even years. Or if we get enough interest and can give the owners enough rent every month they may keep it and let us carry on using it as I know that they would prefer to rent than sell.

Just been down to see the boys at South West RC at their new venue and all I can say is :wub

What an awesome place, loads of space for pitting, plenty space for track, how does 26m straight grab you ??!!

With a bit of work I really think this will be an ace place to race

Can't wait !!

So to compliment the Yatton club starting up...we can now officially present the Weston-super-Mare offering too!!!!

Thanks to swift work from Jimmy we have a club section now available for all our latest news...and WORM Racing in Weston-super-Mare (http://www.oople.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=177) is reborn

Suffice to say, with our proximity to Yatton we will do everything we can to work together and keep our races dates working with each other rather than against...exciting prospect though...we have an indoor venue for ALL weather, and hopefully ALL YEAR racing, plus an outdoor venue for when the weather plays nicely with us :D

Another quick update...given the weather I thought we should let you know we are all systems go for Saturday...tomorrow now :woot:

http://www.worm-racing.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/Outdoor-track-2-8th-June-2012.jpg

The track is now mostly covered in astro (just the temporary stuff til the nice big stuff comes in July :)), with a just a few small patches of gravel/dirt and the tarmac part of the straight, so we definitely have a good track to race on come Saturday!

And...weather reports are now showing a dry and sunny day on Saturday

Can't bloomin wait, the new shapes, lumps, bumps and jumps look ace fun...the pics don't do it any justice!

Roll on Saturday :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:
