how much paint is enough???

I've been painting a few shells, and i was wondering how much paint is enough paint?

For example, last night i was painting a shell, two colours, using a vinyl mask. I guess i put about 6 coats of green, 2 coats of white, 6 coats of orange, 3 coats of white, 2 coats of laquer.

I know that this is qualitative, but does that strike you as too much, or too little? I always feel that i'm cautious to put a load of colour on before I back it with white, but maybe i'm overly cautious.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

How much paint do folk use on a shell? 1/10th of a bottle? 1/5th bottle?

Thank you

Dose depend on type of paint and colour. But in general I put about 3 medium coats on and dry with heat gun in between. Basically you don’t want to be able to see through it. You can try backing the colours with a coat of white. If you use too much paint you will have issues getting your masks off. Hope this helps.

Put your hand behind the shell in good light - if you can easily see your hand you need more layers - if you can’t see through it - your good ;)
