Bristol racing

I'm moving to Bristol in the next few weeks and was wondering if anyone knew of any racing in that area?
I currently race 1/10 electric off road but might be tempted to get something different if there's none of that racing nearby.
Thanks

Hi there...

Bristol itself is a little bit of a black hole for offroad...but just outside there are a couple of options.

I live in Weston-super-Mare and know this little predicament all too well!

Literally just the other side of the severn bridge is the Caldicot club (www.caldicotrcracers.co.uk/), we have section on here to see what's going on, we're indoors every friday night, and run 1/10th and 1/16th offroad. We've been pretty busy lately, getting around 6-7 full heats of racers every week, very mixed abilities so there's a good race to be had for anyone, from newbies to regulars at the nationals....mostly 10th 2wd's of late, but always 4wds and micros as well. Quite a few from this side of the bridge make the trip, so your not alone there! Would be less than 30 mins from Bristol.

As for outdoors, Caldicot only runs outdoors once a year for it's welsh regional round, but...keep your eyes peeled as there is a new offroad track being built in Weston...which will help fill the void a little...more info on that will be released shortly once we get the final go and get things under way.

After that you have Tiverton, about 45 mins south from me in Weston, so probably about an hour or so from Bristol itself...depending on where abouts you end up. Great little club, well worth the trip, they have a section on here you can check out.

Then about 45-60 mins from Bristol, again into Wales you've got Talywain...out in a valley near Pontypool, has been used for nationals over the last few years, though not got one this year...the track there is um....improving all the time shall we say...they are trying to cultivate more a of a regular club following, which they've not had in recent years, so they'd be worth a look too.

Another club (though slightly more rough and ready and the moment) around that welsh area, and slightly closer to you than Taly, is trying to set up a better track now too....GNR....not a lot of info about that currently, but watch the WRCA section in here for more details as they get going this year too.

Hope that helps, look forward to seeing another new face in the area!!!

Can't wait,be good to have more off road buggy tracks in the south west

Let's get back the old days of the SWORDS

There will soon be an outdoor off-road track in Weston I believe and myself and Rob at South West RC have something else we are looking at.

We may be able to use a large split level warehouse for racing in the village of Yatton (it about 9500 square feet of floor space). Depending on how our meeting goes on Monday we may decide to build an indoor astro track. We will make sure racing is on a different week or day to the outdoor racing as we dont want to affect them (plus we want to race there) and it will only be a temporary thing while the warehouse is sold (unless we get enough interest to offer them good rent).

I'll keep you posted and update on Monday.

Thanks for the replies, I'll hopefully start coming racing from mid april

blue_pinky 16-03-2012 12:53 AM

Sounds promising Alan, and reminds me, I never dropped you that email after we spoke at the MK

Look forward to hearing more about Yatton though...sounds like a really good space you've found! Could be about twice the useful size of Caldicot, once you include all the random pitting areas we have, which could be great

A few bits of potential by the sounds of it then...all of a sudden the South West isn't sounding so bleak...lets see how it works out now :D

We should all chat sometime and see how we can make all these things work together the best way possible....and find enough racers to support it all properly :)

We also race buggoies outdoors during the summer at Chippenham (www.cmcc.org.uk) - during the winter we run on-road indoors.

Other mostly on-road clubs nearby are at Gloucester, Frome and Melksham, and during the summer there is one of the best outdoor on-road tracks in the country at Cotswold (Kemble).

It's about 45 minutes on a good day

And we start racing outdoors on the 8th of April

Alan - South West RC 19-03-2012 02:28 PM

I said I would keep you posted on how our meeting went at the unit we were looking at so here's an update. We have the keys!!!

We are now looking into getting some astroturf and clearing the place up (not much involved, just a lick of paint and a sweep). We are looking to start racing the first sunday in April (1st) but it will all depend on how we get on with the clearing up. Just a warning that we do not currently have any timing gear and to start with we will have to do manual timing. This shouldn't be an issue though as we don't expect that many drivers for the first meeting. I will start a new thread with address, date, time, race fees ect. when we have them sorted.

Great news...looking forward to some local racing!!

In terms of Astro...not sure what your plans are but maybe we could try and arrange jointly for that to happen both there and WORM as it will be called...moving it about isn't easy, so combining force's if you have a source might make it easier/cheaper for both!?!

We don't have a source yet but have people on the hunt. How about you?

Alan - South West RC 19-03-2012 06:50 PM

Nothing yet, we have just started looking around to see whats available. If we can't get astro then we do have a source for carpet.

We are poping over in the next half an hour to start planning what needs doing as we are hoping to hold our first meeting on Sunday 1st April. Will all depend on how quickly we can get things sorted. Will be taking some pictures while we are there so will get them posted later hopefully.

blue_pinky 19-03-2012 07:07 PM

Sounds good! Look forward to seeing pics...reckon we might be able to sort out the timing equipment problem for you too...we have that sorted for WORM...sure some agreement could be made to help out with that in some way!

Robocop 19-03-2012 07:20 PM

Ideal sure me and jon will be up to support you good luck see you then.

jonathan may 19-03-2012 07:34 PM

As promised you can find our new website with the first lot of photos here...............

Robocop 20-03-2012 05:07 PM

Good size area you have
if i lived closer i would give you a hand but its a little far see you guys soon

blue_pinky 20-03-2012 06:03 PM

Looks like a good size...exciting!!!

Track downstairs and pitting upstairs?

You able to knock out that central wall structure in the middle to make use of the whole downstairs for track area? Be ace if you can, assuming it's not load bearing, the upstairs does seem to be held by those metal posts rather than the blockwork?

Anyway, sure you have your plans...looking forward to seeing what you can turn it into...if you need any help give me a shout...don't have tons of time on my hands, especially trying to get the outdoor track sorted, but happy to help anyway I can...all for the good of racing locally!

1st of April is only a few weeks away too...good luck!! :-)
