Kyosho Robin 22cc
 

Hi all not posted for a while especially in this section ! I've been given a Kyosho Robin 22cc 1/5 scale car , garage find !

Anyone know anything about them ?

I am aware of the Robin 22cc engine as they were some of the first engines used by FG Modellsport in their very early 1/5 circuit cars and their 1/6 off-road Marder.

I am not aware of any Kyosho models at this scale though, a photo may give a clue as to what it actually is though.

The Robin engines were not particularly powerful at around 1bhp, if you were lucky and were soon superseded by the Zenoah range of 23, 26, 29 and 32cc along with the many copy variants now available, these are now delivering serious horsepower at around 3bhp upwards in standard form with a tuned pipe but when race tuned are simply awesome at around 7bhp!

As for what is available now then there is a huge range of models from FG, HPI, Maverick, Carson and others as well as very specialised all alloy cars from the likes of FG, Contrast, Harm, Hormann, Mechatech etc!

What I can say though they are great fun to drive and race, my latest acquisition is an FG 4WD Mini which for a 26cc in standard tuned pipe trim kicks out over 5bhp and is for limited class BRCA racing.

Thanks for the reply Xracer , I've no idea of the chassis make either but I'll try and get a picture on , as the car hasn't been run for a while and I'm unfamiliar with petrol power could you give me a little run through of the starting
operation please ?
Is it just unleaded fuel I use ? Or does it need an additive?

Yes definitely a Kyosho, it appears they had a range of cars around 2005, there are some videos on youtube of their rally cars and off-roaders.

This is roughly when FG appeared over here too courtesy of King Cobra Racing in Rawtenstall, that is how I got started in large scale with the Marder first and then the circuit saloon/touring cars!

I would imagine spares would be very hard to find nowadays though for anything in this scale from Kyosho.

Starting the beast!
 

Quite simple really just like a petrol lawn mower etc.

Fuel is unleaded mixed with two stroke oil at a ratio of nominally 30:1.

Is the plug OK and clean?

Is there a choke lever on the carb/air filter?

Does the pull start turn the engine over?

Is there any compression?

Do the rear wheels turn freely?

If all is OK then fuel the tank, don't fill it to the brim, there is around 45 minutes of run time from a tank full!!!

You may have to push in the plastic bubble on the carburettor a few time to prime the carb, the bubble will fill with fuel.

As a safeguard wheels off the ground.

Close the choke lever and pull the starter two or three times to prime the engine, you may feel an increase in compression as you pull, this indicates that fuel has entered the engine so stop pulling as you will flood the plug.

Open the choke and pull the starter, it may take a few pulls to fire up, blip the throttle to warm the engine.

Any fine mixture adjustments should be done on a fully warm engine before.

Sometimes you do not need to choke the engine to start, just repeated pull starting is enough especially if the engine has been running and is still warm, it is quite easy to flood the plug with excessive choke.

This all assumes the main jet and idle screws are not a mile from where they need to be!

From memory the main jet 'H' is around 1 1/4 turns out, the idle mixture 'L' is around 1 I think, the tick over screw is not too important at this stage and can only be set one you have the right idle mixture settings.

There may well be a Robin instruction sheet somewhere online.

Any joy GrahamH, I hope so as running the bigger petrol cars/buggies is great fun and without the hassle of having to use a starter box and glow plug heater as with the nitro's.

My first FG Marder had a Robin engine in it,must be about 20 some years ago.
They were a little under powered compared to the more modern Zenoa,still loads of fun though.
