Why does my rear diff keep undoing itself?
 

Finally had a chance to take my car on its first test and after only 2 mins of running the rear diff undoes itself?

Is there something specific I could have done wrong in assembly that could cause it to undo so quickly? The grub screw is done up tight and the front diff doesn't do this, although it does feel a bit notchy in comparison.

There is a good chance of a C-clip problem.

Check if the C-clip that holds the thrust bearing in isn't snapping over the groove of the outdrive. If properly mounted (the sharp edged side to the inside of the diff) the clip should only move hard .

Thanks will take a look. Maybe I damaged the clip fitting it as without the right tool its not too easy.

Ok stripped it down and definitely not the circlip as that was still in the right place.

I noticed that the two bearings on the male part of the diff were in the wrong order - 3.0 bearing switched with 2.5mm bearing. Could it be that causing it to undo?

Otherwise how about the stack being wrong inside the diff, i.e. maybe I got the tiny disk that goes between two bearings at the end of the spring stack the wrong way? (because frankly I couldn't see any difference in them when assembling.

Think I need to buy some circlip pliers if this doesn't work. Shame schumacher just deleted them out my last order and told me to order again last time. Would have preferred the choice of delaying rather than paying postage again...

Do you have the thrust race in the right way round? One plate IS smaller than the other.

Yeah I know that now! Can't get into it now though and schumacher deleted the circlip pliers from my order - gits!

Yes, the outer one needs to be smaller so that it doesn't rub on the inside of the outdrive as the works - as it turns in the opposite direction to the outdrive it sits in.

If the thrust race is in the wrong way, the outer plate will rub on the inside of the outdrive and undo the diff.

Thanks - just ordered some pliers so I can check it out. At least if its this I will know which is big vs small by switching them.

Bit of a fun killer when it goes all front wheel drive after 5 mins :D
