Dreschers 3-Gear Gearbox in B5M

Hi all,

You all may know the success Mr Drescher had in Paris with his B5M. Do any of you know was the 3-Gear Gearbox just 3 Gears with motor in reverse rotation or did it have a 2nd Idler fitted to the motor plate like the Atomic Carbon CR2.

Thanks all.......

I'd assume that it's the new AE 3-gear b5m transmission:

Is there any intel on uk price and availability of these yet?

tyreman 09-11-2014 07:11 PM

End of this month we were told yesterday, but it won't be sold as a kit you'll need to buy everything separately.
Gearbox
Motor plate
New smaller layshaft
Gear cover

Should work well for uk astro then by write up

Am I wrong here. On the B5M the mounting plate is on the near side and the motor on the off side forward of the drive shafts. That's not what I'm looking at here.

Motor and plate are switched over to gain the same rotation as its only a 3 gear gearbox. If the motor was same side as normal it would have to have a 2nd idler gear. Like my cr2 the 2nd idler is on the motor plate. Its for motor rotation and spur gear rotation. If the 3 gear gearbox was kept to the same side as normal you would have to reverse the speedo to run in opposite direction otherwise the buggy would run backwards........

Thanks for the info, that makes sense.

No probs.............

I don't get it we moved away from 3 gear transmission, now they are back? Should we just dig out our old Xfactory X6's with 3 gear transmission?

A friend of mine found that on very high grip Astro tracks a 3 gear, gear box worked really well on his X-6 Cubed

I don't get the point of the motor having to be the other way around myself. Its not exactly difficult to reverse the speedo. Now I'll have to buy another shell and get it pro sprayed so the overall price has just shot up by 50 quid.

Its all to do with motor rotation and the way the motor spins. A lot of testing was completed with the CR2. The original pictures of this buggy was with the motor the same side as the associated picture above. The CR2 conversion was available in both RHD and LHD motor. The outcome with testing was to go for the 3-gear box with additional Idler on motor plate.

This allows for the motor to spin the same way as the layshaft and spur gear. If you just reverse the motor this will change the way the motor spins changing the handling of the buggy.

You never know Associated may bring this out LHD and RHD being 3-gear or 4- gear. Only thinking ahead............

I was only curious at the start to see what Associated had done with the gearbox as rumor had it the S2-EVO was going to have the Idler on the motor plate and just wondered if Associated had done this...........

Still confused tbh. With a 3 gear box like above the motor spins rearwards, the spur and layshaft spin forwards, the idler spins rearwards and then the diff and driveshafts spin fowards and that would be the same if the motor was on the left or the right of the motor plate so it makes no sense to me.

Aussie Top Force 11-11-2014 08:14 AM

There should be no confusion? The recent conventional mid motor has a 4 gear transmission as the motor is rotated 180 degrees to the convenational rear motor, set up so there is no need to reverse the speedy or run the motor back wards.

By rotating the motor 180 degrees in mid motor you can eliminate the extra idler an go back to 3 gear transmission.

The Tamiya Top Force, essentially had a 3 gear rear transmission with the motor forward of the rear wheels, endbell to the left and spur to the right.

I makes me wonder why mid motor design didn't do this in the first place? Bit of a no brainer really!

Yeah i understand the difference between 4 and 3 gear designs and how it alters the direction of the motor in relation to the forward motion of the car. What i dont get is why i cant have the option to run my speedo backwards and keep the motor on the same side. Its loads easier and cheaper to run my speedo backwards than it is to pay for a new body and spray job.

Not all racing speedo/motors have the option to reverse the rotation of the motor and it doesn't work well with motors with lots of inbuilt timing.
