Yo-clone-oh Dogfighter YZ-834b

This could have gone in the "i made this " section of the forum and I'll put a link in there as well but i think it will be better appreciated here .
This is a 3D printing project I've been working on to build a replica of the Yokomo YZ-834b Dogfighter , it started as just a way to produce a few spares for my runner and the list if bits i made grew and grew , then it became more of a list of bits i had not made .... it became inevitable at that point that I'd complete the set . Most of it is faithfully reproduced with a few parts either made stronger or redesigned in a way more favorable to 3D printing .

The Chassis is Kydex and also hand made by me , all the other parts you see are 3D printed other than where i show the my gearbox with stock gears and vice versa.
Right now a more finalized version of the gearbox is printing , its only got minor changes to the design of the original in order to make it printable , the design of the gears is unchanged and compatible with an original gearbox .

This is really amazing, have been following on RC10Talk. Really fantastic work ! What printer do you use ?

Dadio 10-07-2019 10:00 PM

I've only got an Ender 3, so nothing fancy , I've got a better extruder ,Bltouch and the upgrade board with Trinamic 2208 stepper drivers, its still fairly basic but it does what I want it to .
The gearbox is now virtually complete except the diff , I made some sprockets for the chain today as well as more gears , it takes a bit of trial and error printing gears to get the mesh right , Fusion 360 ( the CAD software) has a gear making add on but you have to get the lash right as well as some other bits to get them to run smooth . The sprockets are not from the Fusion 360 add on , I had to just freehand copy them from originals and that was very hit and miss but on my 4th or 5th attempt I got a good result with both positive engagement and smoothness .
I'm waiting on thrust washers and bearings for the diff then I'll fire up the lath and make the outdrives and front drive parts .

Nige55 11-07-2019 10:52 AM

Fantastic stuff, keep up the great work ! Very inspiring

Dadio 11-07-2019 12:11 PM

Thanks
I have the gears all running smooth now and I'm printing what i hope will be a final design gearbox , i threw it all together as well for a look .

Awesome stuff. This is the future in all manner of things

Notch 17-07-2019 08:02 PM

Your work is absolutely great!
I think I got inspired by some of your threads on RC10Talk to start some measuring and modelling of my old Dogfighter.
It is not something likely to be fully completed. My concern has always been the rarity of the drive train parts.
Thus my car has not run since the 90's. Maybe a modified altered clone is somewhere in my future also.
Also: Please tell if You are willing to work for peanuts and make many spare metal parts :-)

Not sure if it helps, but I have made some 834B chain sprockets.
The idea was to make sprockets for both original chain and the larger type Kyosho Optima chain.
The 13T sprockets for standard chain seems fine.
The 10T sprockets for Optima chain fits, but the car does not accept the wider chain without modifying.
I use OpenSCAD and print at Sculpteo.
A link: Experimental chain sprockets 834B std/ot

Dadio 17-07-2019 10:15 PM

I have the sprockets already modelled and printed ,you can see the rear one on the printed gearbox pictures , I already run kyosho sprockets and chain on my upgraded runner , its even got a front ball diff , I'm planning on modelling up printable kyosho pitch sprockets but its not yet done .The other thing I've done on my upgraded runner is use a modern ball diff coupled to a stock diff gear and balls, I used a Team C diff for the out drives and thrust washers with a 12mm sleeve over the drive cups to match the bearings
The rear diff took an unreasonable amount of time to make for this one and to be honest is not of a high enough standard to sell , my lath is manual not CNC and my time is free to me but I'm not planning on making any more , the rest of the parts are probably going to be on Shapeways , probably the most useful parts will be the gears , top deck/chain guide and steering knuckles as they are just unobtainium , its also going to mean that more get off the shelf and get their wheels dirty , well that's the hope .Hopefully you would be able to buy a complete gearbox set that just needs gear axles and bearings and drop it in and save the vintage transmition .
Its all now on hold for a week or two as I have other stuff on my to do list , thanks for the kind words .

Notch 18-07-2019 10:58 AM

Thanks for the update and even more good tips.
Sorry, had to ask about parts making just for fun. I understand the problem with varying quality and precision on handmade items. And then it is supposed to be usable and to fit well with original parts. If a part comes out perfect only the 3rd time, it is not fun to repeat forever I understand.
No pressure, just keep up the good work!

Found a little time to modify some Scorpion re re rear axles to make front axles , these will hold the roller hub on with a regular nut rather than a C clip , i had to first anneal them then turn them and finally harden them again , i also had to insert a 6mm drill bit shaft into the cup so i could hold them in the lath chuck without squashing them but it all worked out and with only slightly frazzled nerves
Shown with an original thats much lighter in colour .
https://i.imgur.com/UObT9ral.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/GDAPSljl.jpg
Next will be to turn and mill the square drives for fron and back , I've got the one way bearings for the front and I'm expecting the little flanged bearings that go either side to arrive tomorrow .

Dadio 02-08-2019 01:17 PM

All the new bits fitted , the eagle eyed among you might notice I've done some vapor smoothing to the ABS parts , this smooths out a lot of the layer lines and gives a more shiny surface ,it also adds a little strength , its done by using acetone soaked into tissue and placed into a sealed container with the part for about an hour , the vapor melts the surface a little .

Made up a very simple roll bar to mount shocks at the rear and fitted some Pargu front shock mounts with a cheap shock i had laying about , its still got genuine rear shafts , no chain or front shafts yet but i could run it 2wd now if i wanted , oh i threw some tires on as well .

Chain guard , new version of rear arms that are much more accurately copied are printing now .

Dadio 05-08-2019 09:42 AM

Redesigned rear arms , the white one was one of the first models i made in Fusion 360 and although i was pleased with it then i later deleted it as it was too flawed , so the two black arms are the new design , a closer copy of the original , one is straight off the printer and the other has been vapor smoothed .

https://i.imgur.com/tOmJpXMl.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/vQpbwEil.jpg
on close inspection you might notice a raised section around the front pivot hole , the car originally had a washer there to space it well into the mount , these have been printed with an integrated washer but i have a model without as well if you wanted to fit washers .

Dadio 17-08-2019 12:52 PM

Well it was and still is "OFFICAL WORLD WIDE SILLY GRIN DAY" :D :D :D
The front shafts arrived today and fit perfectly , its still short of a chain so only rear wheel drive but she runs !
https://i.imgur.com/C2PZdbCl.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/mZ2qMBrl.jpg
Dirty as well !
https://i.imgur.com/PWrzGSZl.jpg
Oh the motor is just a cheap modern one with a sticker on it , the only genuine parts on the whole car are the rear shafts , the nylon gears run smoothly and very quiet , in fact its very quiet , no chain noise i guess , Vidio soon .

Dadio 18-08-2019 08:37 AM

Just a bit of fun , i modeled up a rough copy of a Bolink Funco half body , its not quite right , the cab is too long , this is printed in Vase or Spiral mode , just one layer or 0.4mm thick , printed in PLA as a test print so its quite brittle but it covers it over for now , only took 4 hours to print .

Kyosho chain adapted sprockets designed , printed and tested , its a complete car !
https://i.imgur.com/pLBaeK0l.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/GELg0W0l.jpg
I had a spare Kyosho chain so this was inevitable , fits well even through the chain guide , I've not checked if the chain guard on the side of the gearbox fits but it won't take much to adapt it .

Dadio 19-08-2019 11:27 AM

I had some minor teething trouble with the gearbox design yesterday but its been simply rectified , I have a new version of the body printing as well .
I'm hoping to get some video later but its a typical British summer day , light drizzle and overcast ....

Dadio 21-08-2019 08:05 AM

I finally got some video footage , also had my first part failure , both front suspension top arms cracked at the inner rear mounting , those parts are some of the last parts on the car that are still made of PETG , its flexible but can crack or shatter on impact , not sure weather to print a new set in ABS or Nylon .I also drew up and printed a wing and wing mounts in TPU .

Mr. Constructor 21-08-2019 02:58 PM

Awesome work mate !

as i am planning on a retro online museum for many older iconic cars and wanted to include a lot of self created (and tested in Model and used in driving) 3D parts i want to ask you whether it is possible to get some CAD Data from you to add it to the rest of the lineup. STEP format would be preferred as my solidworks machine easily accepts that format - IGES would be ideal too - beneath SLDPRT Data (wich is native solidworks data) of course ;) .

All other data like STP, 3DS a.s.o. do not really allow changes - and some small changes here and there are quite helpful - especially as my own 834 B might need some part from time to time.

Any chance you might share the CAD Data set with all of us ?

Dadio 21-08-2019 03:36 PM

At some point in the near future it should be on Shapeways , I'm not releasing the files into the wild at the moment ,sorry but it represents quite a chunk of work .

Dadio 24-08-2019 06:39 PM

Fully Nylon front suspension and TPU body , the PLA body started cracking and it rattled something awful so made the new one in TPU a flexible plastic , sorry about the colour its all i had .

https://i.imgur.com/cv1iJ3Yl.jpg

Dadio 25-08-2019 03:35 PM

Oops , looks like another part needs the nylon treatment , this broke landing a jump  Next month I'll get some carbon fill nylon , its easier to print as it warps less , its more rigid and its black so its going to look right as well.
https://i.imgur.com/FGVGe8Ql.jpg

Dadio 26-08-2019 11:59 AM

Just free hand , I've never seen in the flesh the real parts and i adapted it a bit , the trailing arms to mach are on their way.
https://i.imgur.com/oRjXGmxl.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/jajjEMfl.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/cShzmnTl.jpg
it surprising how much it reduces play in the rear arms , i used a nut and bolt through the arms and bearings not just a rod and having slight tension through the axis takes away all the wobble .
If anybody has the real Delta Desert conversion and could give me three measurements i could make it closer to original shape .
1 the overall height from the chassis to the top of the shock mounting beam
2 the height from the chassis to the top of the trailing arm pivot housings
3 the width of the top shock mounting beam at its widest point where the shocks mount
I'd be very grateful and you should be able to measure these points without taking anything apart .

Dadio 07-09-2019 02:53 PM

The first few carbon fiber fill nylon parts are rolling off , the first prints were not so good as even out of the sealed bag brand new the filament was damp and needed drying , after drying the results are stunning .
these front arms were printed before i dried the filament and needed a lot of clean up .

https://i.imgur.com/hhIPa1Ul.jpg
this rear arm is after drying and as it came off the print bed with no clean up , its stunning !

https://i.imgur.com/S3NADCvl.jpg

Dadio 15-09-2019 02:29 PM

I went back to the plain nylon c hubs and i think that's working better . I got dogged off with the constant failure of the one way roller bearings in the front drive hubs so i drew up and printed some direct drive ones instead .
https://i.imgur.com/5xo8VUwl.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/5y9vRCll.jpg
Also printed up a CF nylon front bulkhead , shown next to the plain nylon one .
https://i.imgur.com/jGQ2gfgl.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/sPjiFVYl.jpg
Had a couple more runs today and the gears are still going strong , should have time for another run later .
Its quite a learning curve working out what material to use where , the C hubs and chain sprockets are better in the plain nylon , suspension arms ,gears and gearbox in CF nylon , top deck / chain guide ,battery tray and wheels are all fine in ABS and just the rear chain guide in PLA .
These are my experiences anyway but it adds to the complexity when selling parts , if its a car that's going to get used a little , raced or displayed you might want different quality parts .... more to think about .

Dadio 19-09-2019 11:03 AM

Wish this lot was all genuine , its all development parts . I'm not obsessed

Loving the development mate well done, I’m just not that confident in printed parts especially arms I’ve seen parts fail miserably time and time again. I know it’ll get there imoh it’s just not quite there yet.

Dadio 07-10-2019 10:33 PM

The Carbon Fibre nylon parts are a lot stronger , so far I've yet to brake a suspension arm or trailing arm printed in CF nylon ,with PLA parts brake easily , with PET-G they still brake ,ABS is a lot better , plain nylon is very string however its quite flexible but CF nylon is as strong as regular nylon but much stiffer and may be something you've not seen used as you need much higher temperatures and more expensive equipment to print it , I have had some trouble with C hubs but I think I have it now making them in plain nylon and at a higher temperature plus Pargu Store sell CNC alloy C hubs so there is a ready option , but that's the only suspension component that I've had trouble with , I'm not driving it like a Traxxas Slash at the skate park though as the original car wouldn't take that either but I'm jumping it on a grass track with the occasional cartwheel and crash , I'm driving it way harder than my genuine Yoke though ! That's kind of the point .
This will probably need a tweak to the gearbox to make it fit , possibly a dedicated gearbox that's adapted around the bearing supports , for those who don't recognize it it's a Scorpion diff with a 3D printed interlocking ring gear that matches the 834b gearbox
https://i.imgur.com/ICapfibl.jpg
The genuine yokomo diff is hard to find , this should mean completing the gearbox is a lot easier and cheaper .

Dadio 08-10-2019 07:47 PM

I made some slight modifications to the gearbox today and the Kyosho diff will fit , the other up side is it should make dog bones easier to find , the stock Yokomo ones are asymmetric , they have larger balls on the inner end than the outer and the outer end is the same as a Scorpion , a very stock size so its just a matter of finding the right length .

Dadio 09-10-2019 09:12 AM

Diff fitted

https://i.imgur.com/yQuk39jl.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/LFhawiBl.jpg
Whole diff fitted
https://i.imgur.com/d2obzVsl.jpg
This is all untested , I'm printing a revised gearbox that will be hopefully the final production version compatible with both Diffs and then I'll put that gearbox into testing .... never ending test drives , to be forced to constantly drive rc cars , I'm really sacrificing here guys ! :D
Also drew up plans for a jig to drill the holes in the gear 2 axle for the drive pin and set screw for the chain sprocket .

Peakey 09-10-2019 08:10 PM

Loving it mate, I ran mine at the Banzi challenge and it was making some awful noises in the final and it’s just sat in the garage since
