Advice on Airbrush setup's

Airbrushing Newbie

Been looking at starting this for a long time now, with the price and problem of posting spray cans.

Just bought a compressor from Aldi and was looking at some airbrushes on the cheap end for starters.

What I'm looking for is advice on the setup people are using, the likes of filter/moisture traps is there a certain type required for airbrushing or are they not required.

Is there a easy way of getting the paint out of my existing cans to use with the airbrush or is the paint a different kind.

Basically any advice welcome.

I am not an airbrusher, so will bow to others knowledge, but on the subject of getting paint from cans, AFAIK for airbrushing you use water based lexan paint, while rattle cans use solvent based lexan paint
I would avoid getting solvent paint into the brush as it will be a swine to clean.
I'd use the cans up and then switch to different paint

Which compressor did you buy?

I use water based paint, you will need to use a suitable thinners, and a moisture trap is a good idea. I started with a cheap airbrush and to be honest looking back spent so much time trying to get it to work properly that I would say spend a bit more because it will save a lot of grief, just my opinion though. Don't forget to post up some pics :thumbsup:

Moisture trap looks ok, is the compessor an oilless one?. Have a look at the airbrushes on Jon millers site RCS graffic worx.

Oil one, will this cause a problem.?

had a look on the RCS website but I've not got the pennies at the mo, decanting me existing cans to start off and to practice with.

Most people use the oiless type but I. Can't remember why sorry. I use a ranger from machine mart, have a look at their web site not too expensive.
If you think you might really get into airbrushing then its worth spending that extra on the airbrush because you will end up replacing a cheap onet after a while anyway, I use harder and stienbeck.

ready to start BUT I'm looking at using custom colour De-canned spray for my first few attempts what should I clean the airbrush with.

I think you may need a coalescing filter if using an oil compressor as it will help remove any oils etc that my get in to your air line

It looks like I'm off to a bad start using a oil compressor, doh.

What is the best cleaning product to clean me airbrush with..??

It depends what paint you are using, I'm fairly new to this but for water based paint i just run in under the tap to remove the worst of the paint, then use createx airbrush cleaner afterwards, For solvent based paints I am using a cellulose based thinner from B&Q

I use a bambi oil compressor and have no issues :)

Well finally got round to doing first shell with airbrush, loads of lessons learnt just on these two shells, any comments welcome.

Still learning.

Loads of mistakes on this body
1. Never change design after original has been cut, there was meant to be more white, roof blade was meant to just be solid white and decided to add some grill pattern on the rear deck, hmmm
2. Better choice of colours when blending, loads of shading done on orange but colours too similar
