Drag brakes
 

I can't get to grips with pullback brakes and have always used drag brakes. Driving 1/10 TC with 13.5 boosted outdoors on medium grip asphalt is it ok to run with 80%+ drag brakes or would this overheat motor/esc?

That is pretty high for drag brake. You will be really slow using that. You want to use much lower drag brake if you can. 40% is still a lot. So maybe try that and see where you go. You will always be quicker getting to use the brakes yourself as opposed to making the car so slow off throttle.

Use the brakes. Make an effort to spot braking points & hit them consistently, as well as turn in points. It's the only way to get into a flow.

Using too much drag brake is just a stop gap, and can cause interesting handling quirks that will slow you down.

I found drag brake made the car near undrivable competitively. You don't always want the car to slow quickly off of throttle. Took me a few sessions to master physical braking but my times started improving quickly. I tend to liken driving a touring car to driving a real car. Braking points and turn in points are one of the most important things.
