My latest - happy accident?

Something weird going on, started getting this strange marbling under the masking. I think it might be the old touch up gun and compressor I use for shooting the liquid mask contaminating the surface.

Anyway, it looks like a sort of marbled ice effect... lol

After talking with Jon at RCS, the culprit could likely be static built up when peeling the mask!!! Weird...

I've had this before, but I do not use liquid mask (or havn't yet anyway). When I've had it, I've been using cling film as overspray film because the shells didn't come with it. I figured that it was static causing it, but am not sure :eh?:

It could be static but I'd say it's the film you're using leaving a residue which creates this, it doesn't look too bad to be honest but I'd guess at the film. The liquid mask is super cool and because of the nature of this type of painting ( in the respect of laying the darker colours down first so you don't have to re mask over them before you do the next colour ) I'd highly recommend it ! Also because you can draw the design on the shell and then cut out you don't have to worry about laying the film down in the correct place to avoid crinkles and blow unders.

Liquid mask is the future ! ( and the past, I've used it for about 10 years and it's well worth the drying time which is it's only down side ).

It is static. You even get it with liquid mask.

With any masking tape/fluid, you create static as you pull it off the shell.
The neat curved lines are where you mask has 'juddered' as you peel it off.
The only way to get rid is to wipe the shell where the lighter colour is before you do any dark fades, just to remove any static.

Like I wrote in the email to you buddy..

sometimes it seems to be unavoidable but it would appear to be static. When doing the shading the overspray is caught by the static on the shell. Just to prevent any contamination on the lexan try to give it a wipe if possible first.
To try and remove the static spray some water on the outside of the shell and gently wipe off in a single direction. not all the water need be removed. or try laying a wet paper towel on the outside of the shell. or have heard of people wiping the outside with a tumble drier sheet to help remove static.

other things are to lower your pressure a bit and try to spray away from the open lexan area.

With the shape of shells and the direction you spray ( like spraying into a bowl) it is very hard for overspray to escape the area without touching the lexan and so sometimes it just happens. Trying various things along with what has been mentioned already can help though.

I don't know but would it help by wearing a anti static wrist strap like one that you would wear when working on your computer?

Just thinking out loud.:woot:

Cheers, yes it was liquid masked, and I concur about the 'juddering' that is mentioned. Must have been some specific atmospheric/environmental triggers, because it's only happened very recently. If it is static then I'll know for next time. Very odd that I haven't encountered this before though.

Anyway, just dropped it at the lads house and he loved it. Typical! ;-)

thanks for all the advice chaps, much appreciated.

Trouble is he'll get in contact with you in a few months and say I want it exactly like this, with that effect you did...:woot:
