Motor seems steppy
 

For some reason the Speed Passion 6.5t I have in the Kyosho is very steppy, and it makes the car sound horrible at low speeds, like it's 'cogging'.

I've got the spur and pinion setup to have a little bit of play, so they're not hard up against each other, but they're not too far apart that it can slip.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on? Have I setup the spur/pinion wrong?

Just to add to this.

It's an LRP SPX ESC with a Speed Passion Motor.

Both are a couple of year old, but only 5 races old (yes I've only raced 5 times!).

I've tried replacing the sensor wire, and that made no difference.

make sure motor screws arent in to deep and catching inside motors, if thats ok remove from car and see if it car or motor

Even when the motor is out of the car, it feels very notchy when you turn it by hand, but saying that, so does one of my other motors, they certainly don't feel 'smooth'.

The car runs fine as well, it's just you can hear the cogging at low speeds, especially on accelerating.

it will feel very notchy that's the magnets, as does ares thats OK it was the clicking noise i was more concerned with ares is that noisy,

I think the clicking noise is the little bit of play between the spur and pinion. As you turn the motor it reaches a point and then quickly jumps a little, when it does that little jump it slaps the pinion against the tooth on the spur.

should be ok then ares feels very lumpy

maybe is antena to close with some of the esc wires and making some electromagnetics interfering, i hade same problem and after moving esc wires away from antena, problem disappear.

Here's a bit of an update.

It seems to be some sort of electrical issue.

At one point it even increases in speed.

Now I've had this problem since I got the car, and in that time I've had a different ESC and motor. I'm pretty certain I've also changed the transmitter, but I can't remember.

Could this be because the transmitter is crap? It does the same thing even with another motor in.

I've turned off reverse on the ESC as well just incase it was that.

Anyone any ideas?

I have the exact same issue with my car (dex210) when you roll it on the bench, not quiet as loud as yours but basically the same thing. I never noticed the issue untill I changed the motor, I had a new hpi flux 6.5 which didn't do the stepping thing, but wanted to try a different brand to compare power as the hpi seemed a little flat , so bought a used Lrp x12 off of the for sale section on here and ever since has had the same stepping issue same as yours. No real problems when running though.

It's definitely the motor that is the difference but the motor is unbelievably quick compared to the hpi and is the same turn. The only thing I thought it could be is that the person I bought the motor off advanced the timing on the motor and overheated it and damaged the motor magnets or/ and armature causing the problem.

When the car runs, it is too quick really and runs quiet hot so could be that, and on the straight I am sure on a least one occasion it stuttered, also noticed that where the sensor wire goes in the motor was a little loose although that would only be a problem when the car is turned on, not tried running the motor out of the car but will do while it's in bits.
