You open/stretch the circlip with some circlip...

You open/stretch the circlip with some circlip pliers before you position it in the diiff so it sits in it's recess nice and tight which prevents any slipping or loosening of the diff.

I Just finished a hole season with my SV at my local club and mine is just as the manual says, open 90 degree from fully tight, have you done the cirlip mod?
