I was in the same boat when we had our twin boys - went from 1 kid to 3 overnight so needed a bigger car.
We drove all the usual suspects - Smax - VW - Renault etc.
Nicest car by a mile to look at / sit in was the S-Max - but they were new at this time and 2nd hand ones were rare - also cost new was silly.
We ended up buying a Grand Scenic 1.9 Diesel (new but a UK Import) and 7 years on it's been great. It's done 80K and engine feels as good as the day we got it. Fully loaded with all 5 or us / roof box and luggage it will still do 50mpg on the motorway. Does 40+ just pootling around. Boot is also huge and it's a 7 seater when it needs to be.
Don't know what i'd replace it with when the day comes - probably a low milage S-Max. It's super comfy - great for long journeys and most of the time I prefer driving it to my Civic Typer R!
