Default VW Dual Mass Flywheels?

Anyone got experience of dual mass flywheels?

Mine has gone and I have been offered either aftermarket parts or a solid flywheel conversion kit.. (Both about £600 quid fitted)

Not sure what to do, would rather go with what was fitted as std, but I do tow a bike trailer so don't another £600 bill if it goes again..

Its a mk5 Golf TDI 1.9 with 129k on the clock...

never heard of you being able to change from a dual mass to a solid type flywheel, the rolling mass would be different for a start.
ive fit many dual mass flywheels onto failed units on lagunas and meganes as i used to work for renault.
to be honest your car has done 130k the flywheel on your car will be the original so its not something you are going to have to change often, personally i would fit a standard item go with the aftermarket as you will save a packet and make sure you get a complete new clutch with a new hydrulic release bearing if it has one as a lot of vw clutches are of the pull type.
good luck.

its common to fit std flywheels to replace dual mass, ford do it for the transit, and there are lots of kits out there, personally i would not do it unless the manufacture says its ok and you instal a calibration to the pcm for solid flywheel

towing a bike trailer should definatly not kill a dual mass flywheel, poor driving or normal wear and tear is what kills em.

solid replacements are allways the way to go imo, seen loads and loads of these done, dmf s are just a bill waiting to happen. never seen a downside to fitting a solid flywheel and the taxis ive seen with them in are doing hundreds of thousands of miles with them.

Here in the states that is what the majority do. I just replaced my 6 speed clutch setup with a 20lb solid flywheel and a better pressure plate and clutch disk and it is nice. The stock setup with the dual mass is nice but IMO cant handle much in the way of upgrades for more power. If you are in need of a clutch setup, since the exchange rate is in your favor on that side of the pond give us at ABDRacingwerks.com a call and I will take care of you.

I popped my DMF years ago and fitted a G60 solid flywheel and a VR6 clutch to my mk4 TDI. Don't notice anything different apart from it's lighter now and now it pretending to be a VTEC pulling strong all the way to 4500rpm lol

Thats what I was after, haven't managed to speak to someone that has actually swapped.

Looking at the history it's had a flywheel before, and I do tow two bikes plus a car load, so thinking the conversion would be my best option.

Just wanted to make sure it would drive/feel the same.

Cheers!

I have no idea about Mk5's sorry. When I worked for an independent VW specialist MK5's were new enough to still be visiting the main dealer.

Assuming the flywheel/clutch is the same as the mk4 it'll be the same as the mk2/3 bits I used I guess.

I don't have any problems with mine. I fitted it probably about 75k ago. I mainly drive 20 miles hard to work every day and drove to spain and back
