Big up and thanks to Ian and the Maritime crew for a great meeting (again) today.
Great start to the 2013 2WD regional series for the South East and some great driving by some old and young drivers to make the A final.

Great Qualifying performance from Kyle and John Painter to place 4th and 5th respectively and some good close racing throughout and a special mention to young George Tollman for putting it in the A and racing really hard in the finals. Not bad for a U13 fella. Certainly teaching us old dogs a trick or two.

Thoroughly enjoyed myself and nice to catch up with old friends - even if one of them will soon be competing in the Canadian series. Hard fought finals - close racing throughout and some good fun.

Well done on the TQ and win today Grant.

As George does not have an oople account he has asked me ( his Dad – part time RC mechanic and full time Taxi ) to say Thank for your kind words and to say how much he enjoyed the close racing he had with you and also to say Thank you to a few people on his behalf for a “ fantastic day “

George has only been racing with his DEX 210 a few times ( but he has been racing his Dex410 for over a year now at Faversham Off Road Car Club and so he is not a newbie ) and the last time out he managed to severely twist his chassis. ( probably something to do with hitting a chair at near full speed .. )

Lucky for us, James Clifford had just taken delivery of some new 210 +8mm chassis that he has had made and so George bought one and fitted it to his 210 for this meeting. He really liked the way the 210 handled with the longer chassis, and it really suited his driving style so Thanks to James Clifford for helping sort him with the new chassis and for the tips on how to fit it properly.

Now a nice fast chassis is one thing, but having a decent set up is also an important thing to learn and for that, we wanted to say “Thank you” to Les and Ed Kerry who have been very patient in explaining about setups and how racing in general works to a 12 year old boy who sometimes forgets more than he remembers.

On the subject of forgetting things, this time, he forget to ‘scrub in’ his brand new tyres so that as the end of the heats approached, (and after all his hard work to get himself into his first ever ‘A’ final at a proper regional event), it was looking like he would have to go out to the finals on some brand new shiny tyres. But that is when Ed gave George a set of his own ‘prime’ tyres just so that George could have a chance of having a decent drive in his A final. So George asked me to say a big Thank you to Ed for that as he appreciates what a generous act that was as Ed could probably have done with those tyres for himself.

Lastly ( but by no means Least ), I would like to say a very big ‘Thank you’ to Ian Knight and his team for making it possible for George to race…..

As many of the regular attendees to the Weds night racing at Faversham Off Road Car Club now know, George has a rare bone disease that sometimes means he cannot walk and has to use a wheelchair. This is very intermittent and can sometimes be for a couple of hours or sometimes for a few days at a time.

I should add at this point, that previously he has been very self-conscious about his wheelchair and about people knowing about his disease but thanks to the encouragement from Alan Moon and support and help from the great crowd at FORRC ( and by support, I mean that literally as well - as several of them lift him up onto the stage when he is in wheelchair ) , he is now ok both to go racing in his wheelchair and for people to know about his illness.

As much as he wanted to take part in a Regional series, we had resigned ourselves to the fact that we would not be able to race at Maritime as we could see several issues like the flights of stairs, how would he get to the rostrum, would he slow up the fast turn around and hold people up, what about marshalling etc.
Unbeknown to me, Les and Ed Kerry, knew that George wanted to race, and they spoke to Ian Knight and between them, came up with some ideas and put plans in place so that George could race safe in the knowledge that they had it covered and whatever happened he would be able to race his RC car in a regional event and that he could take part in a hobby / sport where despite his illness he could compete on a fairly level playing field.

As it happened, on the day, George was fine and none of the plans needed to be put into action but it was reassuring to know that the arrangements were in place if we need them.

George had a great days racing at both the 4wd and the 2wd regional events and thoroughly enjoyed himself ( I don’t think he stopped grinning all the way home from Maritime on Sunday evening ) and to hear him regaling his mum with the stories of how he had come fourth in one of the legs of an A final ( and of course she had to hear an almost corner by corner account of how he had been third for ages only to lose a place on the last lap at least 3 times that evening ) was absolutely priceless for me.

So on a personal note, as his Dad, I want to say Thanks to Les and Ed but especially to Ian Knight for letting George do what he loves to do, which is to race his RC car and have fun while doing it.

Andy Tollman ( aka ‘George’s Dad )
