Default WHY DO I KEEP STRIPPING MY SPUR GEAR?

I race a Cat SX on an indoor carpet track, it's very tight, lots of on/off throttle, and there's alot of traction (I use foams)... I know, not really buggy territory, but I don't get chance to race outdoors much.

Although it's been shelved for a while, the last two outings I stripped the spur gear because the centre of the spur seems to have warped/melted causing it to move off centre.

I was wondering what could be causing this? Slipper too tight, or could it be something else that's worn out causing it to happen? Before I put a new one on I thought best do some research as think it'll do the same again if I don't adjust something.

Many thanks,
Jason.

That's normally from running the slipper clutch to slack, which causes that much heat it melts the center of the gear, new pads can help if they are shiney they slip to much and also running the slipper tighter, also make sure all the bearings on the layshaft are in good condition

Thanks Phil. I'll strip it down an have a close look, then rebuild it accordingly and see how it goes.

The slipper pads do look a bit shiny Phil, and are very smooth to touch. Prior to the spur stripping the slipper wasn't making the usual loud'ish noise either, it was more of a high pitch whistle (similar to a loose ball diff struggling to bite). Not sure if to just get new pads for £6 or an entire slipper set for £11.50?

MY SX2 USED TO DO IT, IT WAS FROM RUNNING MY SLIPPER TO SLACK. IT MELTS THE CENTER HOLE FIRST THEN THAT KNOCKS THE MESH OUT I AWAYS CARRY SPARE SPUR GEARS BECAUSE OF IT

Think i'd better order a couple more spurs then. I'll stick new pads in and try to get a good balance to avoid it happening too often. In the meantime I'll get looking for some bargain spurs. Thanks Will (possibly see you at Bury on Sunday).

I used to have same problem and yes its slipper too slack but check nut on slipper isn't coming loose as mine kept loosening. i put an extra nut on end. also RW spur gears help.......ALOT because they are thicker and more resilient to heat

My replacement is an RW, and I'll put an extra nut on, all really helpful tips. Thank you.

If you got original SX, then you might should consider this upgrade:
http://www.racing-cars.com/pp/Old_Ca...SX2/U3794.html

I basically used this one solely since it came out and even before did mod to use slipper spring on spur side - it lowers probability of slipper loosening itself significantly.

Thanks Lochness. It is an original SX, I was looking at a spare lay shaft I have and it's threaded both ends like on the link. Because it was different to the illustration in my manual I left it in the spares box. Think I'll dig it back out.

the steel gear upgrade does help a lot as the spring isnt covered up so works like a tiny heat sink and stays cooler

Thanks Adam, that's a bargain. I won 4 SX spurs on ebay for just over a tenner, so made up with that. I'll still look out for the steel upgrade too, I've no plans on getting rid so I want components that'll last.

Quick update... Raced tonight and it went really well. RW spur, slipper tightened right up with the extra nut on the end so it won't come lose. Still going to keep my eyes open for a bargain steel upgrade though.

Thanks to all for helping me out.

Sorry I haven't been around this week much. If you want to go cheap - you can do spur side spring mod yourself by just replacing screw holding outer slipper plate with grub screw of appropriate length - of course you should thread lock it in place. Then you have to use some washers on gear side where spring was as there isn't thread all the way down to gear and add just nyloc nuts there so it stays in one piece. What is next step is quite obvious - put washer, spring and another washer on newly mounted grub screw and adjust everything with nyloc nut on the end. You'll might have to drill small hole in undertray due to long grub screw or you'll shorten it so it doesn't rub on it.
Then you can use http://www.racing-cars.com/pp/Produc...ist/U3846.html instead of alloy/plastic gear. Is it really worth it? Full steel pinion upgrade conversion for SX1/2 is about the same as just the steel gears for original layshafts and there is no hassle with sourcing grub screw and any other additional work required. So it's up to you to decide what you want.

Thanks Lochness. All good stuff. Steel gears are on my watch list, I like the fact they will dissipate some of the heat too.
