Nitro block nightmare
Just painted my Dnx 408 shell, was looking nice so I decided to keep it that way by backing it with Nitro Block.
1st coat on, I returned to the shell after 30 mins to find all the paint had 'crazed'. Looked awful, the shell was clear in parts where the paint had seemed to shrink so my pinstripes now had clear edges in places. Most annoyed. What did I do wrong, did I not leave it to dry long enough before Nitro Blocking it, or is my nitro block buggered ? |

Hey, I haven't used Nitro block before but I once had a similar issue where it started to crack/wrinkle the paint when I was backing (only the white)
I found that its a best to apply backing in thin coats and dry with hair dryer between coats, once the first couple of coats have gone on then it can be applied a little thicker. Also I tend to leave over night before backing to ensure the paint has fully cured, but this is just my preference. Last edited by U1timate PigDog; 29-03-2011 at 10:49 PM. Reason: add text |

Yep, apply in very light coats. 3/4 if possible. by putting thicker coats on it has reacted with the paint on the shell.
Thin coats and dry immediately! if left, it gives it time to soften the paint underneath it. |

dry each coat of paint properly with a hairdryer or such. once the shell is done, make sure to dry again. then leave at overnight but a couple nights is better.
then as said, apply the nitro block in light coats, not holding the can too close to the shell. let each coat flash off for approx 7-10 minutes |

I've never used nitro block so I've no idea how this will work. Can you put some mental bright neon colour behind your design and then re apply new nitro block to that as described above ?
In the custom world of automotive paint there used to be stuff called 'Vereble' ( which I can't remember how to spell proper like ) anyway, you'd use a 2 coat system, slow base and fast topcoat and it would crack with great effect if you used the right colours. Just a thought to salvage your design. You might be surprised that people actually like it, random often gives designs an edge |

Just decided to try and salvage it - re painted where I could on all the white where it went totally crazy. Look ok.... from about 10 foot away !
New shell to be bought, and try again..... |

10 foot away... daylight or dark ?
We've all had stuff go wrong, keep at it mate, we learn the most from our mistakes. |

I know it's an old thread but people will always be painting shells,
What I do is I spray my shells with 3 coats and a backing which only takes about 15 - 20 minutes drying between coats with a fan heater, Then I leave 24 hours minimum before using nitro block and I reheat my shell again before applying each coat of nitro block which cures it nearly straight away and stops you getting that "crazed" look.
