Default 22-4 .... Will there ever be a Gear Diff?

I love this car....but I just keep hosing the Rear Ball Diff. Are TLR planning to release a Gear Diff for this Buggy?

Looking at the manual, it seems the diffs might be a bit short on space to replace the balls for gears. That said, if it is possible to make it work then I wouldn't be surprised if this is one of the new parts TLR is working on in preparation for this year's World Championship

roomer has it that their is an updated 22-4 soon, and it will be in shorty config and geared diffs, also they will fit the currant 22-4.

Does anyone actually race these anymore, at least in Europe? I see the 22-4 popular in the US - which makes sense because it was built for those slippy tracks. But I think it will be a tall order to get people to buy a new one of these in Europe where we race mostly on astro and carpet.

Hi All,

If the car is running good with Ball diff, why MUST there be Gear diff in it.
I run high bit on Carpet and Astro and have no problems with Ball diff on my 22-4......

You're in the minority then mate, I know of very few people who would say the same.

Personally, I found it to be the most disappointing 4wd buggy I've had in 26 years of racing.

I've got to say I love my 22-4 and I've never had a problem with the diffs.

I've had it from the day they came out in the UK, broken 2 front wishbones and a front belt. It's a solid reliable car.

JohnM will know what I'm going to post. My car was 1st batch, never had any diff problems at all, only ever rebuilt the rear once in all the time I ran it. Broke a couple of rear tower's and had the original front hinge pin problems! never replace a belt, ran my tensions as 1st built from the manual.

These days I have no time to spend doing rebuilds etc and the car has always had good reliability from the box apart from the hinge pins. BUT that car+ high grip I never ever found a set up that worked car was just nasty!!! On dirt and grass its one of the best I have driven, then showed it astro……Oh and while I'm on the subject will be in the for sale section this weekend…cheep

I would not be surprised to see a slim planetary gear diff in the 22-4 2.0, but for now that's just speculation.

I do wish they would update the car. I also never had problems with the ball diffs. Just the amount of work to get to them. If they kept the basic design, but made it more modular to access the diffs and slipper would be good. My problem ws the front pivot breaking. If they just updated that to aluminum I would have kept the car. I sold mine not that it was a bad car, it was awesome on dirt and high bite carpet. Just cringed at the fact if I had to fix anything during a race I had to tear the entire car apart to get to it. Belts, slipper, bearings, clicker, rear shock tower. I liked the fact it was different than anything else out there. And it worked

I hope they adressed the 4 main issues I had with the 22-4 :
  • access to diffs and belts
  • weak front suspension (especially the kit hingepins)
  • waaaaaaayyyy to heavy (better with shorty mod)
  • slipper adjustment in combination with sealed drivetrain and balldiffs

Looks like a smart update to the existing buggy rather than an entirely new platform.

+1

But I doubt it can be 100-150g lighter just with few updates

no

too many different parts between 1.0 and 2.0 :
belts, pulley, belts covers, bulkhead ...

to me, the only direct fit parts are front arms and rear hubs (with rear cva)

...but maybe with some mods...?? wait and see
