Default Llanfechain Show - Star in a reasonably priced (Radio Controlled) Car

On Monday 29th August 2011, Oswestry Radio Car Club were invited to the Llanfechain show in Wales. We set up a small track within a fenced area and six club members took their cars to run 'demonstrations'.

Ashley Williams had the great idea of running 'Star in a Reasonably Priced (Radio Controlled) Car'... Top Gear style...

Ash fitted an old Losi (of course) with a silver can 540 and set the Tx endpoint to 60% so that the car could be run at full speed around all corners of our tiny track. We charged 50p for children to drive three laps and the computer spat out the best of the three which we put on a Top Gear Style score board which Ash has made with realistic grey metal background, magnetic white name strips and a black marker - it was very authentic!

If the car had been able to stand 6 hours of continuous use we could of run 100% of the time as we had a constant queue of children and parents. As it was we stopped every 30 minutes to let the car cool down and to allow the members to show the onlooking crowed how it should be done

By the end of the day we had lap times at nearly 80 seconds from some 5 year olds and some sub 14 second times by a group of teenagers who came back time after time to try and knock off a tenth of a second from their previous times. The top three won a supply of Haribo and chocolate.

It was a great day for all and we have been invited back for 2012 when I think we will have more cars, more prizes and maybe put the price up to £1

From the number of club flyers we gave out we hope we will get some members as the show is only 12 miles from Oz.

Well done to Ash - the idea was inspired and very well executed. Thanks also to Jeff, Sarah, Chris, Owen and Dean (who supplied the Transit to move all of our stuff!)
