Default Schumacher Cougar KF - Noisy Transmission

Hi, just started racing a Cougar KF and it seems to be quite noisy.

I've checked the usual stuff and done a few rebuilds of the entire drivetrain, lubed the metal side gears, tried different spurs and pinions, different electrics (motor + esc). Checked motor is parallel to spur gear shaft, checked all fasteners multiple times, tried running tighter and looser mesh (can clearly hear when it is too tight).

Are they just a bit noisy or should it be silent running!?

I think it may just be the motor noise being amplified through the chassis as it is hard mounted in the middle of the carbon fibre lower chassis.

Not getting any 'bad' noises like crunching or whining from badly meshed gears or dirt in the drivetrain, just seems to be loud compared to other cars. Not seen another KF running yet so got nothing to compare it to.

Thanks!

a guy at our club has had issues with his kf, we found the rear of the chassis where the gearbox fits was 1mm out on one side, this was causing stripped belts, strip the car and check, if so schuey will send a new chassis

Thanks Dicky for the response, I'll have a check of that - do you mean the outline of the chassis is out or the mounting holes are out of place?

Additional info:
If no motor fitted, it all feels quite smooth.

I also have the shorty conversion fitted which seems OK.

Thanks.

Hi. Am the guy that had the chassis problem. It was the holes on the chassis that hold the gear box in place that was out of line.

I had the same problem mate, took me ages to get to the bottom of it. Mine sounded like noise from the pinion - spur mesh and no matter how i set the mesh it still was there it sounded like i had installed the transmission from a mid 90's predator !
I tried 3 different 83t spur gears and found that they where out of round, there was always a tight spot in one area of the spur.
I swapped to an 81t and at the same time put some lube on the two metal gears that run on the end of the layshaft and the noise went away. Its now as quiet as my cat aero.

The manual shows to use black moly grease on the side gears... that was your noise
