Default Round 4 Mendip Race Report and Results

The oOple Team made their now annual pilgrimage down to Weston Super Mare for Round 4 of the Series held at Mendip Raceway.

The club have made some alterations to the track since we last visited and although it was a bit smoother it still had all the off camber features and the famous tree stump to negotiate!

We have loved this track since our first visit and the layout put down by Martin Owen and Ieuan Payne was fast and flowing and used all the features.

The weather was unbelievably hot as this summer continued to bake everybody and everything. Just staying out of the direct sun was a mission in itself and it caused a couple of issues for stand in Race Controller Matt Guppy as his soldering prowess was tested to the max, every time his connectors fell off!

The tyres favoured at this event were Schumacher Darts, the Proline Pinpoints were tried but whilst they had drive they lacked sidebite on the astro sandy surface. The oOple team tested a new Proline tyre called the Pyramid which somewhat resembles a Dart but with pyramid shaped spikes and they were very good - Watch this space!

John Finch from RC Octane was on hand with his shop and reported a brisk trade as drivers honed their cars for the track.

For the first time ever the racing was stopped during Saturday afternoon for another sporting event - The England World Cup team doing the country proud and going through to the Semi Finals. So two rounds were run from Midday until 3pm, stop for the footy then back at it from 5pm until 6.30pm with Round 3. To keep the non footballing racers happy the track was left open for practice and we then squeezed two more qualifiers in on Sunday morning before three leg finals for all!

Hopefully the 90 entries in attendance got all the racing they could want out of the weekend.

In the 2WD class it would be Chris Evison with his PR Evo taking pole position in the A Final, with local drivers Mark Hancock - Associated B6.1 and Iuean Payne - PR Evo lining up second and third. A special mention to Scott Broadbent who put two great runs in on Sunday morning to place his B6.1 in tenth on the A final grid for the first time.

In all three legs of the A Final it would be a demonstration run from Chris Evison, only leg 3 looked like getting away from him when a small mistake let the chasing pack catch up but he just got his head down and drove away. Behind Chris it would be Iuean with another PR Evo making the most of his local knowledge by putting in a string of second places with some great driving. In third place overall came Ian Joyner who is competing in his first year of oople racing and he looked like he was loving it. He battled hard to get two thirds and a fifth to finish third overall with his Schumacher KC.

Overall 2WD A Final Reasults:

1st Chris Evison - PR Evo
2nd Ieuan Payne - PR Evo
3rd Ian Joyner - Schumacher KC

Other 2WD Winners were:

B Final - Kevin Hodgkinson
C Final - Steven Ball
D Final - Aaron Skinner
E Final - Roy Davies

In 4WD local old boy Craig Harris was back supporting oOple Mendip and took an emphatic pole position along with all three legs of the A Final driving his Charisma.

Second place on the grid and second overall was the Associate B64 of Mark Hancock but he was pushed hard by Stephen Lawson driving a similar car, Stephen taking second in the final leg to secure third place overall. That second place for Stephen meant Chris Ely driving the Tekno was demoted to fourth even with two third place leg finishes.

Overall 4WD A Final Results:

1st Craig Harris - Charisma
2nd Mark Hancock - Associated B64
3rd Stephen Lawson - Associated B64

Other 4WD Winners were:

B Final - Matt Hinks

The Trucks were split into 2WD Short Course/Stadium and 4WD Short Course with 17 drivers taking part.

In 2WD Truck it would be Matt Guppy taking Pole in the A Final with Jordan Newbury in second and Stuart Carling lining up third. The three legs were won by Jordan Newbury driving his PR truck beating off Stuart Carling who finished second and Simon Osbourne having a good run from fifth on the grid to take third overall. Sadly for our pole man a combination of running around with a camera, running race control, trying to run race control and attempting and failing to beat arch rival Damian Whittle in the 2WD B Final meant he thermalled and he sat out rounds two and three of truck.

A Final 2WD Truck Results:

1st Jordan Newbury - PR
2nd Stuart Carling - ??
3rd Simon Osbourne - ??

The 4WD Truck final started with Damian Whittle on pole, Matt Bateson in second and Tristan Morgan in third. Despite most of the field (Neil Burdess) setting off at the start of Leg 1 well before the tone, Damian managed to secure the win. Unfortunately Matt Bateson thought he had blown his ESC and didn't compete only to find out it was the lipo that had gone. Tristan Mrgan had so many fans fitted to his truck they pulled so much power his steering stopped working. Neil Burdess thermalled himself in the heat much for the same reasons as Matt Guppy mentioned earlier and had to be put in an air conditioned car to cool down. That left Danny James and Dave Madsen who happily raced each other to come fourth and third behind Tristan second and Damian who won.

A Final 4WD Truck:

1st Damian Whittle - TLR SCTE 3.0
2nd Tristan Morgan - Tekno
3rd Dave Madsen - Durango

Well done to all the drivers!

Thanks to our sponsors, Schumacher, CML/Proline, Inside Line Racing, Mad Models, Dremel, RPRC/Tekno.

Cheers to the oOple Team for putting another great event on.

Finally thanks to Gary Simmons, Matt Guppy, Martin Owen, Andy Nelson and Iuean Payne for organising a great meeting.

Special Thanks to Neil Burdess and Stu Wood for helping Guppy run race control and basically giving their racing time up so the finals ran to time!

oOple Mendip Thanks
I'd like to thank Dammo and his team for selecting Mendip again, great venue. And for all the oOple team for organising the event.
It's only when you organise something major that you appreciate all the hard work that goes into something like this.

I'd like to thank the Mendip committee and Martin for providing us with a great track layout. Fun to drive for the good drivers and us normal club racers.

Finally I'd like to thank Mat Guppy, Birdy and Stu for running the meeting and providing comentry, well done and thanks guys.

Awesome as ever! Loved the layout this year. Well done to all the team at Mendip.
Big thanks to Damo and the oOple crew for bringing the show to town again this year.
Never a dull moment when the oOple crew are in town.

Great to catch up with the racing goons from Southport and some of the quality people from all over the UK.

Roll on Southport and my continued domination of Aidan, Bally, Garner, Tipsy, Tommy and #Beautiful Tim.

Although I bet it rains at the Southport one

Regarding Proline Pyramids, what compound did you find worked well, Z3 or Z4.

Just about to test some at Mendip in the coming days
