It was pretty obvious that if all 4 gears were meshed then it wasn't going anywhere Other than into a big pile of striped teeth

Wrong mate
If the spur turned it's bevel gear independently and the othergear on the same plain was free to rotate
And they were all meshed
Then the bevel driven by the spur would turn each prop bevel in different directions and would have the load halfd buy the other opposite freely rotating bevel idler... Easy... Could have worked in this way!
