Default Vega B4.1 Gen 2

Having just got my Vega B4.1 Gen 2 i'm looking to see if there is anything i need to know.

Im starting with this set up from Danny Mcgee:

Front
Oil: 37.5
Piston: Associated 2 Piston
Spring: Big Bore Losi Green
Shock Position:
Inside on the wishbone
Second hole on the tower
Camber Link:
Inside on the tower
Shortest link on the Hub
2mm under the bump steer washer position
Brass bulkhead

Rear
Oil: 30
Piston: Associated 1 Piston
Spring: Big Bore Losi Pink
Shock Position:
Inside on wishbone
Middle on tower
Camber Link:
Second from top on the longest (inside) hole
Middle on the standard 0 degree rear hubs (turned around the make the camber link a bit straighter)
Short Wheelbase
4 degree's antisquat
3.5 degree's toe in

Motor: Tekin 7.5
Speedo: Tekin RS Pro
Gearing: 26/81

Is this roughly what people are using, or is there a base set up other than this?

I also need to know what gearing I should be using. I have a speed passion 6.5 going in.

Paul.

Hi Paul, Yes this is a great base set up, to be honest I havent changed much at all since building my Gen 2.

I run 3mm-4mm under the front inner ball stud indoors on carpet and a Losi BB Blue front spring, the rest is the same.

As for gearing, what spur are you running??

I'm on 78 x 24 on a SP v3 7.5

Here's how I've run my car for some time now, mainly round maritime which is multi-surface so would recommend as a good starting point.

Front:

Shocks:
Vega Protoshocks - (1.4 2 Hole 2 Slot - 32.5wt Losi - Vega Blue Spring) - Currently using
AE V2's (AE No.2 Piston - 35wt Losi - AE Blue) - Was on car previously
Shock Position: Middle on tower, Outer on wishbone
Camber Link: Inside on tower, 3mm under stud, Middle on caster block, 30 Deg Blocks.
2mm under the bump steer washer position
Standard Bulkhead

Rear:

Vega Protoshocks - (1.4 2 Hole 2 Slot - 30wt Losi - Vega Blue Spring) - Currently using
AE V2's (AE No.1 Piston - 30wt Losi - AE Silver) - Was on car previously
Shock Position: Middle on tower, Outer on wishbone
Camber Link: Top hole on middle row on tower, 3rd hole out on 0 degree alloy hubs with top part marked A. (Hubs reversed to straighten link)
Medium Wheelbase
2 degree's antisquat
3 degree's toe in

Motor: HPI 7.5
Speedo: HPI Flux Pro
Gearing: 26/78
Cells in centerline config, 60 odd grams under them aswell.

Gearing for a 6.5 I'd say 24/25 on a 78 spur. Hope that helps!

Cheers guys, i have a 78 spur on so il try around 24/25 pinion?

Does this car have alot of steering? If your adding 3-4mm on the front inner that should take the edge off from what i remember.

I've got it all wired up, i just need a few bits to get it all finished off.

It seems the full size savox servo doesnt want to let my speed passion gt 2 fit in along side it, so i have mounted it on the battery strap for now until i get a low profile servo

Do you get much heat also? the shell seems to be very snug. all holes are currently sealed, but look as though they wouldnt add much anyway!

Yes I raised up the inner ball stud to chill the steering a bit, I found it made it more consistent in the turn, I'm no pro btw!

24/78 sounds perfect on the gearing

Yes a low profile servo is handy when using a big speedo, check out my car in the show me your vega thread as I use a gt2 speedo and savox servo

As for option parts, most of use use the avid or j concepts alloy steering rack and me and Lewis run a brass bulkhead but up to you on this

I'm sure you'll love the car

I ran the car last week, being my first race in roughly two and a half years, the vega needed to help me alot!

Using the above set up, the car seemed very twitchy, more so the rear end seemed very stiff! It gave tonnes of steering, which I enjoy, but didnt seem to handle the bumps just as well.

A few changes I made to suit my driving, was related to soften out the rear end.
I moved the rear camber link to the middle position, both vertically and horizontally as the position originally just didnt seem 'right'.
I dropped to green rear spring running the shocks on the middle hole on the tower, and inside hole on the wishbones.

This seemed to make the car on rails! it handled all areas of the Southport track extremely well, giving up fast lap times.

Overall with a meeting of 8 heats and a very competitive top 3 heats I finished 8th overall.

Absolutely thrilled with the car, on high grip it didnt try to grip roll, it was, as said, on rails!!

I've just put in some new electronics, here are some pictures.

Running a full size servo, it was very hard to install neatly. I'm still not happy with it, but there isnt much room to play with at all!
I've been told the low profile servos are slightly slower, as such its put me off as i need a very quick servo to keep up.

Having installed the FrySky system it helped alot with space management. This is also an excellent system from what ive seen so far.

Ran the Vega again today, and struggled alot with side bite.

The track was damp, with on and off showers. I made a few of the following changes to try help:

Lengthened and lowered rear camber link
Dropped to AE silver spring to prevent the front digging in

Once the track dried out, the car had tonnes of steering ( reverted back to my original set up above )
I'm now thinking do i either reduce the front end, to take away some steering. Or adjust the rear end further to try get more grip.

Any advice on which way I should go to make the rear end more planted?

Il help you with this when I've got more time mate!!
If your running v2 shocks 40-30w I think was what me and mark smith ended up using at southport in dry.

What front tyres were you running in wet?

When I'm not half asleep il help you out

Abit of a mixture to see what works really! Had Green mini spikes on at first which worked well, but i decided to try green staggers to try reduce the front end grip which worked, but I still struggled with sidebite on the rear.

The dry set up will get there with some tweaking to suit my style. I'm more looking to see what to do when it gets wet as the sidebite was of concern.

I am running the V2 shocks, with the above set up which was softened up when it got wet, but normally im not as far out as I was.

Paul, why did you not ask at SP about setup!!!

Are you going Barrow this weekend, stick your head in and we can have a chat.

Ps there is not much chance of the car steering without the steering ball cup connected

Tony

Did you have a c4.1 aswell as this ?
Noticed you had a few things up for sale!
Not much time on here tonight but try lowering the rear ball stud on rear tower.
This is the main thing to try in wet, softer on rear 2.5-5.0 lower oil and maybe one spring to green if your running silver.
What's it like for on power grip? Have you tried messing with the antisquat.
Have you tried a shorty down the middle of the chassis or fully at rear?
Tony will help you out mate aswell he will probably know more than me Ive been sticking with the c4

I had bits from a c4.1 which I sold on. The vega just looks and feel a more well built car so decided to stick with that

I've actually started to run with green rear spring as standard, it makes the car more predictable from what i've experienced so far - however dropping springs all round is normally the first thing i do.

Weight distribution does feel alot more biased to the front, when jumping more throttle is needed compared to when I ran the SV2 to keep the nose level, which has made me go for a even softer rear end than say the centro runs.

Anti squat I was running two degrees, but towards the end of the day I was told possibly running more would help me. On power seemed OK - however nothing amazing compared to others I was watching. It was more the car over rotating through the corners which I struggled with.
