Default Race Results R4 Winter Series 24th Feb 2013

As usual the weather was the governing factor from the beginning with freezing temperatures coupled to a bitter northerly wind causing a lot of problems. Do you drive with gloves on and put up with reduced feel of the controls, or take them off to enable better driving and put up with stinging cold fingers? Some people were seen to leave theirs on until the 10 second countdown started and this seemed to give an advantage over the 5-minute race distance. Also due to the combination of the wind and having no rain for a week the track was bone dry with no frost (despite the occasional snow flurry) making dry setups the order of the day with hard tyres/inserts, low ride heights, stiff anti roll bars, and anything else to get rid of the dreaded grip roll.

Vice Chairman Stumpy was notable in his abscence so hopefully he'll get the DIY projects finished before the next race day and come down and get that new 1/8th nitro buggy dialled in.

Mark D (Losi Ten T) dominated 1/10th qualifying taking three wins with Mark R (losi SCT) managing two second places and a third. 1/10th regular Nick S was cruelly sidelined with suspected radio problems afflicting his new Ansmann X4TE 4WD buggy but at last Sunday's play day this looked like a quick, well-sorted car which could do well in the future. Dave G provided some entertainment with a huge Traxxas Summit which was bigger than some of the 1/8th truggies and just drove over anything that got in its way. Try to bring it back soon, Dave. If anyone gets stuck in the mud at the end of the race day you'll be able to tow us out.

In 1/8th group one qualifying Ian R (Losi 8Te 2.0) posted the first ever nine lapper on the new track in heat one and backed this up with more of the same in heats two and three putting himself on pole for the A final. It doesn't get much better than that! Captain Carnage (Losi 8B EU if you're reading this in Christchurch) also put in a strong showing in his first race as club Chairman with a second/second/third combination and Dave "Block" R (Losi 8B 2.0 brushless) also did well managing two third places and a second, although his impressive lap-after-lap clearing of the quad jump was as much an achievement as his qualifying result.

Group two was a bit less predictable. Alex (HPI Vorza) eventually stopped crashing to cross the line less than half a second in front of Mark D (Losi 8Te 2.0) to take the win in heat one with Nick S (Durango DEX408) third and in heat two Alex and Nick S came first and second respectively with both posting the first buggy nine lappers. Simon F (Team Nick S HotBodies D8) and Dean (Hong Nor X1CRT/HPI Trophy Truggy Flux) battled for midfield places through the morning with Dean taking two fifths and a third and Simon three fourth places showing that in the right hands the completely standard D8 with limited rear suspension travel can still gain a creditable result. Perhaps the engineers at Team Nick S could experiment with the optional Hara D8 rear shock tower and 112mm shocks to bring this otherwise excellent package up to date.

In the 1/10th final Mark D again led from start to finish although the Ten T was seen to have far too much grip and actually looked quite difficult to drive as a result. After the race a number of options were suggested including the fitment of 1/10th buggy wheels which would not only lower the ride height of the car but give a better choice of tyres, allowing the use of the hard tyre/hard insert option favoured by the 1/8th buggy guys for dry conditions, right through to Ballistic greens which are favoured by 1/10th buggy drivers as they stick like scandals to a politician in the wet. Mark R came in second but if it hadn't been for him having no option but to use his second car for the final, things could have been very different.

Crashing out of heat three after five laps put Alex in the B final which he won to get the bump up with Dean coming home second and posting his first eight lapper after steadily getting faster all day. Relatively new driver Nick C (Losi 8Be) had an excellent final posting a respectable seven laps in his first ever race meeting, not bad going! Jordan (HPI Trophy Truggy) finished a respectable fourth.

In the A final a huge first lap crash upset the applecart with four drivers involved. Eventual winner Alex was handed a massive piece of good fortune by happening to be on completely the wrong line for the corner where it occured and scooting around the outside of the pile up. Ian R led until a crash on the penultimate lap, and Nick S came home fourth due to serious grip roll problems which were later traced to some premounted Schumacher tyres which hadn't been glued properly allowing the bead to peel away from the wheel. I myself have had several sets like this from Schumacher where i've had to finish them off myself and it's a shame that an otherwise excellent, British manufacturer lets themselves down by seemingly employing people who say things like "omg ive just wasted a tenner on a cup of coffee and a bun in starbucks lol" to glue up their wheel and tyre sets. Dave "Block" R finished the day in third place with Simon F fifth and fastest nitro driver of the day, Captain Carnage sixth (another nitro doing well) and Mark D seventh.

Really and truly the only person who can be considered for Man Of The Meeting can be Race Controller Stu. After being cruelly knocked out of heat 2 with a broken Associated RC8Te and suffering engine problems with his new RC8B which ruled him out after effectively one heat, he nonetheless stoically carried on running the meeting single-handedly, with no shelter in the bitter cold so that the rest of us could race. Stu, i'm ashamed to admit I (and perhaps a few others) forgot to say thanks for a great day's racing which wouldn't have been possible if you hadn't been there.

Next race day is in two week's time on March 10th, so take advantage of the current awful weather, stay indoors, get those hex drivers twiddling and get your cars ready! Hope to see you all on the 10th or this Sunday (03/03) if you want to come down for a play

If anyone has any pictures or videos of the day can they please post them up? Thanks, and thanks to all involved for an excellent day's racing!
