Default In need of some advice

Have just acquired a 2nd hand cougar sv, I've gone to put my 7.5t motor in with 26 pinion an it's a very tight fit, I think the spur maybe an 82 as the spare that came with it is, is it better to put a smaller pinion like 23 or will it overheat?
