Default 1/10 off road tire advice - info

Ok so i know this is going to be a very opinionated question but please i just want some basic help/info regarding tire types and basic info on what to use for various surface types.
I used to use (yellow or blue mini pins) for everything but since i left the hobby it seems there is a huge range available.
So basically i will be racing on mainly

Astro
Astro mix
Carpet
Carpet mixed

Any help would be greatful :-)

TBH the best advice will be to see what works/is allowed at the tracks you will run at.

Broadly on astro Schumacher yellow mini spikes in the dry and ballistic buggy mini spikes on the wet work on the rear - fronts it depends 2wd or 4wd?

Carpet would normally say Schumacher yellow mini pins for the rear (if allowed) again for the front is it 2wd or 4wd? .what is the non carpet mix? Wood, polish, etc?

However the Schumacher Darts have been working well at some tracks, both indoor and out, hence my suggestion of asking people at the tracks

4WD
Mixed as in wood, polished, carpet. Some of the local clubs have a mix for their indoor tracks

Most of the local outdoors i used to race at were 90% astro.

Here is my view on tyres for Astro and Carpet that I would use. Even if there is a mix in the surface I usually use the same tyre. Hope it helps.

Astro

Dry
  • Rear
2wd or 4wd
Schumacher Yellow in most cases in either Mini Spike 2 or Mini Dart
Ballistic Buggy White Mini Spike - only on some tracks
Schumacher Yellow mini pin but these usually have too much grip and you end up grip rolling. Also the tyres hand off the end of the rim so you may find you cannot use them at BRCA events that allow this tyre as the card will be too wide.

On all tyres you may want to cut off outer and or inner row to tame the grip so that you can push harder but be safe in the knowledge that you are going to get less grip roll.

Use either medium foams or medium tubby
  • Front
2wd

Schumacher Yellow low profile cut staggers no insert

4wd
Schumacher Yellow mini spike
Ballistic Buggy White mini spike
Schumacher wide cut stagger

Use 2wd slim tyres on the front if getting too much steering or grip roll from front end.

Use normal front foam inserts
Wet
  • Rear
2wd or 4wd
Ballistic Buggy Green mini spike
Ballistic Buggy Pink mini spike when extremely wet but not often used now
Schumacher Silver Mini spike or Mini Dart

Use normal foam inserts
  • Front
2wd

Schumacher slim green mini spike when very wet
Schumacher silver low profile cut stagger when damp to wet

Use normal foam inserts for the correct with of tyre

4wd
Ballistic Buggy green mini spike
Schumacher Silver mini spike
Schumacher Silver wide cut stagger

Use normal foam inserts
Carpet
  • Rear
2wd or 4wd

Schumacher Yellow Mini Pin 2 - require less bedding in than the Mini Pin
Schumacher Yellow Mini Pin - required bedding in
Schumacher Yellow Mini Dart - can last longer than mini pin and less grip roll

Use normal foam inserts
  • Front
4wd
Schumacher Yellow Slim Mini Pin 2 - Stretch across full 4wd rim. Less grip roll
Schumacher Yellow Wide cut stagger - Requires bedding in
Schumacher Yellow Mini Dart

Use normal foam inserts

2wd
Schumacher Yellow mini pin slim - Can be very edgy. Many pins will need to be cut off. Usually end up with oversteer. Can also be stretched over full size front wheel.
Schumacher Yellow mini dart - Edgy may need some pins cut off.
Schumacher Yellow low profile cut stagger - Safer than mini pin but not when the grip is not available
Schumacher Yellow low profile stagger - Safest if the above options are still too edgy. When they wear can end up with understeer

Do not use inserts on the stagger tyres. All others use normal foams cut to tyre size
