Default Race Results R2 Winter Series 11th Nov 2012

Weather conditions were as close to perfect as can be expected at this time of year, very cold but with almost no wind and glorious sunshine for the whole day. The frost thawed by about 10am leaving the track extremely slippery but on the positive side, there wasn't enough warmth in the sunshine to dry the astro meaning a uniformly wet surface remained for the whole day making tyre and setup choice relatively simple, unlike the actual driving. One or two small puddles were easily dealt with before practice started.

Nick S (Durango DEX410) dominated the 1/10th class driving calmly and consistently for most of the day and taking the win in 2 of the 3 heats and the final, although round 2 saw Dave R (Mr. Block) take 1st place with some impressive 1/10th truck 4-wheel drifting and tripling the quad jump on a few occasions, quite an achievement for a 1/10th car with no grip Mark R also gave a few of the established stars a run for their money with his short course truck, getting 2nd place in round 3 and 3rd in the final, well done that man! Stumpy's Losi Ten was sporting a 17mm drive hex conversion kit allowing him to run 1/8th buggy wheels shod with Schumacher Spirals which no doubt helped him to 2nd in the final, these seem to be the tyres of choice in these conditions.

In the 1/8th class qualifying was a tense affair with Alex (HPI Vorza) in group 2 posting the fastest lap in each round whilst Ian R (Losi 8T 2.0) in group 1 was more consistent in always being 3-4 seconds faster than Alex over the total race distance. This was shaping up to be an epic battle between buggy and truggy (think Prost/Senna, Rainey/Schwantz etc.). Simon F managed 3 2nd places in group 1 running the Team Nick S HotBodies D8 to earn a place in the A final and in group 2 Matt (Captain Carnage) showed there's more to come from his nitro-powered Losi 8B 2.0 by bagging 2nd place in round 2 and the win in round 3. The ever-improving Mark D (Losi 8T 2.0) was always a threat with 2 2nd places and a 3rd.

In the 1/8th B final Dave R managed to win what in my opinion is always the most difficult and nerve-jangling race of the day to get the bump up to the A with Stumpy (HotBodies D8T) taking 2nd and Jordan (HPI Trophy Truggy 4.6) 3rd.

The 1/8th A final was restarted after 1 lap due to Matt's Losi being shunted from behind by a runaway truggy about 2 seconds before the klaxon sounded. Alex led from start to finish although his driving was seen to deteriorate in the final 40% of the race due to suffering from a little-known psychiatric condition known as "the 2-minute jitters", when a normally sane and rational human being becomes unable to drive an R/C car around the track for the final 2 minutes of a race for no apparent reason. Remember to take your medication next time, Alex. Mark D again showed promise by coming in 2nd with Ian R fighting back from a first lap crash to take a well-earned 3rd.

Due to November 11th being Remembrance Sunday a 2-minute silence was observed at 11am, thanks to all present for taking part in this as we all owe a great deal of thanks to those who gave (and continue to give) their lives for our freedom.

Other interesting aspects of the day include Levon Traut (Associated RC8B) debuting the Tekin RX8 brushless system which looked to have been installed very neatly and showed amazing straight line speed with the Tekin 2650kv motor. See you again soon Lev, and try and get some more of the Clanfield guys to come down soon. Also due to the cold conditions a lot of people seemed to improve their driving by simply remembering to put their gloves on as soon as their heat finished in order to get their hands back up to room temperature in time for the next round.

Only one individual can really be considered for the title of "Man Of The Meeting". In only his second ever race meeting Jordan took 3rd place in 1/8th rounds 2 and 3 and backed this up by taking 3rd place in the 1/8th B final. Looks like Mark D will have to hand over that "Most Improved Driver" trophy in the spring

Hope to see you all next time (25th November weather permitting, watch this space)
