Default Race Results R3 Winter Series 9th Dec 2012

From the beginning the weather was a worry, as light rain had been forecast for the morning but although there was the occasional squall this never became severe enough to affect the proceedings. As in round 2 the track remained damp and slippery all day but heavy cloud cover meant it was never going to dry out, making it ideal for those of us who like our cars to slide around a bit. One thing everyone could have done without was the wind, it froze fingers, made eyes water and even some of the 1/8th cars were seen to be caught by it in mid-air towards the end of the day.

Most farmers and landowners suffer from vermin infestation and unfortunately (through no fault of his own) our landlord is no exception as was evident when it was discovered the gazebo had been stolen for the second time this year. It takes a particularly lowly and worthless form of life to actually break INTO a portable toilet and the time spent planning the theft of the gazebo could have been better employed earning the money to buy one . Fortunately Dean had arrived in a furniture lorry meaning race control were able to use his for the day.

The 1/10th class saw "Mr. Block" Dave R (Losi Ten T) dominate throughout the day with three wins in qualifying topped off with another win in the final. The virtually identical Ten T of Mark D took a 2nd and a 3rd in qualifying backed up by a 3rd place in the final whilst Mark R (Losi SCT) and Stumpy (another Losi Ten T) battled it out through qualifying with Stumpy notably absent from the final and Mark finishing the day 4th. Championship leader Nick S (Durango DEX410) took 2nd place and fastest lap in the final but struggled in qualifying (still managing a 2nd place in heat 3) although this can probably be attributed to the distraction of his much-anticipated Durango DEX408 making an impressive debut. More on this below.

1/8th qualifying was in some ways the same as in the previous round. Group 1 saw championship leader Alex (HPI Vorza) setting the fastest lap in each round with Ian R (Losi 8T 2.0) being more consistent and winning the first 2 heats by the narrowest of margins, indeed in heat 1 the emerging double act crossed the line less than a second apart. However, these two weren't going to have it all their own way as in heat 3 Ian was ruled out by a cruel 1st lap crash whilst the aformentioned DEX408 of Nick S took a win 1st time out! The established stars had better watch out as this car will only get faster as the Taunton man gets it dialled in. The nitro-powered Losi 8B 2.0 of Dave R also featured highly with two 3rd places.

In group 2 "Captain Carnage" Matt (Losi 8B 2.0) and Simon F (Team Nick S Hotbodies D8) were the ones to watch with a win in heat 1 backed up by 2 second places for Simon and 2 wins for Matt. Clearly the screaming two-strokes have a future in the hobby despite brushless becoming more popular. Stu (Associated RC8Te) took 2nd place in round 1 and 3rd in round 3, Jordan (HPI Trophy Truggy 4.6) was 3rd in round 2 and Bernie (Brushless Hyper 8) managed a creditable 3rd in heat 1, 4th in heat 3 combination but was sidelined in heat 2 with suspected drivetrain problems.

The 1/8th B final was always going to be a knock-down-drag-out scrap with 2 highly experienced drivers, Captain Carnage and Ian R fighting for the bump up. Matt held Ian off for a few laps but eventually had no answer to the truggy driver's combination of brushless power and sheer hunger to get into the A final. Stu took 3rd with Bernie again showing constant improvement by coming home 4th.

In the 1/8th A final Dave R again showed future potential by battling with eventual winner Alex for the first part of the race, and Ian R fought all the way from last on the grid to 2nd. Nick S came home 3rd after a first lap incident (no names mentioned Alex) but this was an impressive drive as this caused him to be in last place on the 1st lap and being amongst traffic in a final is one of the worst places to be. Simon F borrowed some Schumacher Spirals from Levon Traut and quickly became accustomed to the feedback from the Northampton tyres to come home an impressive fourth with Dave R 5th. SCRC veteran Dean (Hong Nor X1CRT) came home 6th, another impressive drive with a nitro truggy on the new buggy-friendly circuit layout. The advantage of the buggies was further backed up by summer series runner-up Stumpy (HotBodies D8T truggy) finishing the day in 7th place.

Man of the meeting? Ian R, without a doubt. Fighting back from a truck-smashing 1st lap crash in round 3 by rebuilding the car in the bitter wind, winning the B final and very nearly doing the same in the A is what motor racing is all about. It can only be a matter of time before this man gets his first win on the new circuit and if this happens it'll prove that truggies are still competitive here in the right hands.

Special thanks to Levon (Associated RC8e) who took nearly 200 pictures of the day which are in a public gallery here:

One more driver deserves a mention. Newcomer Nick C, who has only driven at the track a few times, turned up to watch and ran a few LiPo packs through his new Losi 8Be after the finals at which point it was noted that his driving is improving fast. Simon F and myself stayed to watch and were amazed that someone used to a truggy could take to buggy driving so quickly. Precise over the quad section and getting progressively tighter on the apexes, Nick circulated almost until it got dark (despite the unpleasant wind) showing that the best place for him is in a race. Are you reading this in Southampton?

Glad people are enjoying the race reports, once again thanks to all involved for a great day's racing, with the new more technical circuit layout the racing is a lot closer and anyone can win.

I think this shows that the sky's the limit for SCRCCC

Track is open every Sunday for testing apart from when we actually race (although we have a test area that can be used until the racing finishes if you don't want to throw yourself in at the deep end), winter race dates can be found here:

If you're reading this and you're a 1/10th or 1/8th off-road driver anywhere near the south coast, come down for some trouser-fillingly fast racing action!
