Still a role for the 3 gear box?
I'm racing on a tight grippy indoor track at the moment. I can't help but think a 3 gear box may work here. The brass fly wheel feels good, but I'd like more of the effect without having to add weight!
Anyone still try the 3 gear? I'm not sure what's involved, or if it's possible to fit to the squared car. I notice the DEX210 has a 3 gear option, but don't know if anyone uses it. Also I imagine the DB1 feels more like a 3 gear. |

I very much doubt that any of our team will use the 3 gear any more, it just is not as good as the 4 gear everyhwere we ran it, including slippy

We do have a massive stock of 3-gear trans cases; however, it may be the worst mold we have ever made and you'll work very hard with shim stock, the occasional touch from a Dremel, and a hobby knife to get one of them to run well. Even then, it's noisy and everything wears fast. The 4-Gear, of course, is just the opposite: Throw the gears in and she runs quiet forever.
Further, we have no 3-gear motor plates and don't know where one might be, so if you have a 3-axis mill in your basement, or if you know a machinist, it's not too hard to make one. Otherwise... The 3-gear was made for the original molded shock tower (of which I think we still have one or two -- writing from home so not sure) so the trans height shims are different front to back to make it sit level and I'm not certain you can have the zero height. But the 3-gear will bolt into a Squared chassis. |

Thanks for the info Chazz. I wonder whether an external idler gear on the motor plate like some people used on the S2 could be an easy way to get close to the same effect, think that would be a 5 gear! Not sure if there would be room though. |
