Default Hobbywing EZrun 60A will not run from new

Hi All

I have just bought a Hobbywing 60A EZrun ESC for my sons car and hooked it up to a brand new 10T sensorless motor. When I powered it up it wildly cogs, won't pick up revs and generally sounds like a bag of spanners. I also tried it on my 10.5 sensored with the same results.

Help please?

Have you set the esc up properly with the radio gear or have you just plugged it in and hoped for the best. As with most new esc`s you have to set them up to talk to the radio otherwise it will all go to pot.

Yes I calibrated the ESC to the Radio and it did that just fine. Good suggestion though.

just a couple of possibilities to check

(trying to help not be clever)

check you have wired ESC to motor correctly ie A-A B-B C-C

also check you havent bridged any terminals at the motor while soldering

(i did that once and the motor went all doolally on me )

if you are going to run the sencor wire you need to have the wires a-a b-b c-c and the cable. if you are not going to use it the wire it up the way you want the motor to run cw or ccw


you also need to calibrate it to work with your radio.

did you calibrate it correctly??

the 1st flash then the 2nd flash and 3rd flash...??

i know you sent it back now but i had a hobbywing speedo in my lrp shark, i wired it correctly a-a b-b c-c and colour coded wires matched but it still acted funny and cogged and had a dead point,

i had done everything else correctly,

after running a rew races in that condition a fellow racer who had the same speedo had his wires different, 2 colours not matching, so i put mine the same as his and all ran fine then, no cogging, went like **** off a shovel acted normal, and i won the winter series with it..

That's because sensorless systems pulse on 2 poles and listens for EMF on the 3rd pole. Depending on motor manufacturer etc. not all ESC's and motors align the same way so sometimes you need to move the connectors along 1 at a time and you'll get much better results. That is how my EZRun 60A's are in all our cars. None of them are wired up A-A B-B C-C. Mine are A-B B-C C-A kind of config.

must admit not something id thought of

cos when i swop two wires on any of my sensorless motored aeroplanes they always go backwards

maybe something in programming in /esc

Thats the only reason i swap round my wires. But saying that 2 of my wires in my shark and my chunk are wired different same as Froggers

Thanks for all the other suggestions, I appreciate the posts. Just to be clear this is what I did:

1/ Calibrated neutral, forward and then reverse (with the flashes confirming all working)
2/ Wired aa bb cc
3/ Tried every ab bc ca etc etc combination
4/ Checked for shorts between motor wires
5/ Tried another motor
6/ Tried the motor on a different ESC (worked OK)
7/ Tried a different radio system
8/ Full reset on the ESC and tred most of the above again

Conclusion - its buggered, I was an electronic engineer way back so I did consider stripping it down and fixing it but so many components are surface mount and hard to source that I would probably just invalidate the warranty for nothing.

Take it it is as genuine one? Lots of fakes about.

Don't send it back yet!

You need tO calibrate the esc with your throttle switch set the other way! Mine did the same and I found instructions somewhere that state the transmitter needs to have the reverse switch changed or it won't work.

Sorry did not mention that, but yes I did have the throttle reversed. I have a Hobbywing Xtreme ESC in my 44.1 so am used to the calibration methodology.

Regarding it being a fake, it is possible of course. The box had the Hobbywing hologram and it all looked a proper retail quality box but I did not check the code with the website.

The vendor was very quick to respond and give me the return address, if it was a fake I would not have expected such compliance. We shall see. I have managed to get another second hand Hobbywing combo to rescue my sons race at the weekend which I will keep as a spare or sell on again.

Sounds like you did everything right.

I once had a 25A EZRun faulty out of the box so yours is probably not an isolated occurrence. Saying that, with all the responses so far it gives you a lot of confidence that it's a good product.

It could be worth your while to get a USB LCD Programming box (if you don't have one already) because it allows you to upgrade the firmware. All of my EZRuns were on old firmware out of the box. There also seems to be a few older version ESCs being sold since one of my recently bought ESC's won't take the newest firmware.

A quick update, the vendor in hong kong requested I post back to him and I have just received back a brand new esc which this time works perfectly. So I am out of pocket for £3 or so but still a pretty cheap esc.
