Default Schumacher steel idler upgrade kit, is it any good?

hi there,

my idler gears are on there last legs so need some new ones. i was going to buy some standard ones until i saw this:

http://www.redrc.net/2010/09/schumac...-gear-upgrade/

it looks promising but has anyone tried it? here is a link to it on the Schumacher website:

http://www.racing-cars.com/pp/New_Ca...SX2/U3794.html

comments and views are welcome

many thanks

lewis

Got it on my SX2. It's loads better mate. The slipper spring now operates directly onto the slipper and not through the gearbox. It seems quieter and runs much more freely and is much tougher than the original setup. Deffo worth the money.

thanks for the comments i will defiantly be ordering one but i have a few questions....

because the gearing is slightly different how much do i have to change my gearing?

also does the standard gear cover fit?

and finally, people have said the steel gears are loud and others said it is quieter? why have people had different results?

many thanks for the comments

because the gearing is slightly different how much do i have to change my gearing? It's minimal. Andy used his 'normal' gearing at Worksop last weekend. I believe Schumacher are looking to produce a gear chart.

also does the standard gear cover fit? Yes

and finally, people have said the steel gears are loud and others said it is quieter? why have people had different results? Don't know for sure. May be different type/quantity of grease? I can't claim to have noticed any difference.

many thanks for the comments

lewis

Hope this helps

Not the best sollution, assuming they're talking about ball diff grease. Ball diff grease is used to prevent slipping of the diff rings under heavy loads, so it's not what you're looking for on gears.

I guess AE's black grease is more for gears?

I've been running the Tamiya Ceramic Grease for some time now, with no noticeable wear or noise starting (Original gear setup).. So works for me.

Mine was sounding like an original Pred tonight while running the gears dry. Popped some AE black grease on them and they quietened up nicely.

cheers for reminding me big g. i was supposed to order mine sunday but forgot! so i ordered it this morning form Schumacher so it should be here tomorrow or Friday.

one question big g, do you have to put AE black grease before every meeting or have you put some on and forgot about it? also my idler gear cover has had the ends cut off will that matter if i apply AE grease to the gears?

many thanks

lewis

I'll look at them when I get home, but I suspect most of that grease will be plastered around the cover now. It's a little bit noisier after 5 races...
